So many fish in the sea

Sometimes its really not that hard to see how telemarketers hook their fish (outside of the vastly illegal abuse of the elderly). We had a person call in today (my guess is white male in his 30s) wanting to invest in gold and silver. I laid out the basics of different types of offering both numismatic and bullion and after everything I said he asked if it was a good investment. Our policy here is to not give any investment advice because lets face it my crystal ball broke last month. The interesting thing is that he was insistent on me telling him what to buy and when I told him no he asked if there was another company we could recommend that would. As has been said in the past, you can't fix stupid.

Sometimes what appears as stupid is just part of the issue, there's a healthy dose of insecurity and self doubt in this situation. Throw in a little of pushing the responsiblity on to someone else, with a smatter of the world should have clear cut answers and you have a number of people like your caller. Some of these same people keeping checking their maps to find Easy Street.

he could watch the "coin show" on TV image

  • Well, I think you did the right thing by not giving him advice. He would've sued you if you were wrong and made you look like you were one of those telemarketers even though you are not. But some who work on comission (not sure if you do or don't) would've said anything to make the sale.

I accept responsibility for my "bad investments" just like I do for my "good investments". 2008-W Silver Eagle with Reverse of '07=Good Investment. State Quarters Formation of the Union set=Bad Investment!
I'd keep playing. I don't think the heavy stuff will be coming down for quite a while!

At the risk of moving this over to the PM forum... Is your company offering any bullion or XF-AU 90% gold near spot?

The "act" may have been to see what direction you steered him. He could have been from a tv station or some consumer protection type agency trying to set you up.

I used to work at a credit counseling agency and we got that fairly often to see if we were ripping people off (we were).
