Who's got a coin with a snake on it? Post it!

UtahCoinUtahCoin Posts: 5,366 ✭✭✭✭✭
Stupid snake bit me....
Note the fang marks, swelling and discoloration....
Fortunately it was a "dry" bite.

In honor of this, post a picture of a coin with a snake on it.

Our back yard has a lot of "Texas blind snakes." I'd never heard of them until I looked 'em up. They look like oversized worms, maybe 6 to 8 inches long, aren't capable of biting humans, and their favorite foods are ants and termites -- so I think I'll let them be...
  • Ouch !! Hopefully you were able to dehead the buger, so he doesn't have a chance to ever try it again.

    What kind of snake?

I hope you took care of it! You know a snake bite can be very traumatic. You must pick up the poor creature, and make sure he is not overly stressed.image

Is there any contemporary documentation that this is a worm rather than a snake? It looks too big in relation to the birds to be a worm and a snake would make more sense.

I'd post my snake photos if I knew how. Can anyone explain to me how to post photos directly from my computer? I don't use a hosting service like PhotoBucket.

The snake is on the other side of the hedge from the worm, and this is well-documented. image

Cottonmouth, thank goodness it was a dry bite. Although the snake probably would have died of an infection after biting me (I dispatched the snake with the power lawnmower)

  • If you are in Utah, the reason it was a "dry bite" is because it was a harmless, non venomous snake. (unless it was your pet)

There are no wild cottonmouths in Utah, the most northern part of their range is southern missouri/ southern illinois.

Methinks you are full of B.S.!

The perils of living in Texas!

While I was there I didn't see any Cottonmouths but a buddy brought in a 24" Coral Snake once!

We also had a rattler under the computer room raised floor which was a big surprise to one of the techs!

WHOA, You are dang lucky, cottonmouths are bad tempered and usually aggressive. I'd not expect a dry bite from an animal with at reputation.

Cottonmouths are one of very few highly territorial snakes that will actually make an effort at an attack.

Most definately fortunate circimstances for you.

Here's a somewhat older coin, from 200 BC to be exact, from Pergamon, a Greek colony in Turkey. They were really into snakes there as you can see on both sides of the coin.

Sometimes snakes don't stay where the map says they should. I've seen more than one in central Kansas. Anybody here golf
on Saint Andrews west of KC would be able to confirm. I guess they didn't know that that was not part of their range.

Oh no, I can assure you that there are plenty of them in N. Central TX, namely, Grapevine Lake. Several people have been killed in that lake over the years by 'intruding' into a nest of them in the water.

Copperheads are also very indiginous to the area.
