So....I go to my first coin auction this evening......
As there was one at a local hotel conference center about 5 blocks from my house. I am very new to coins as I am getting into it as a new hobby with my son. I have received many helpful hints, suggestions on reading, and even some nice "freebies" from some of the folks on here for my kiddo. Needless to say he is very excited.
So tonight, the old man decides to head down to this coin auction. A local and very well respected auctioneer here in town did the sale. I got there about 15 minutes before it started and decided that I might buy a something if the price was nice.
It was an impressive collection!!! The story the auctioneer shared was this was a collection that was left from grandfather to grandson.......Grandpa, dad and grandson were all in the banking business. These coins had not seen the light of day since they were last appraised in 1966.......and most of the items had been kept in the bank since that time.
Jr and I have decided to collect half dollars, and the new presidential dollars (since we did the state quarters) They had a few nice halves at this sale, so I figured what the heck, I will see what happens.
I picked up a 1949 Franklin half listed as AU
a 1943 Walking Liberty half listed AU
a 1957 and 1959 US Proof sets
This auction was heavy into pennies, gold coins and some nice currency items.
Assuming the grades are accurate on the two coins I won what would you think was a good value to pay for these four items? I did get to visit with one gentleman who actually bid against me on a similar Franklin Half and he did tell me that he thought the grading overall was pretty accurate and if anything a little conservative on a number of items.
Regardless I am very happy with my purchases. I figured it would be a nice and safe way to get a couple of older halves without breaking the bank.
I could not stay for the entire sale, but did stay for about 90 minutes, the real big stuff was going to happen at the end....which is when I decided to leave...I knew it was all WAY out of my price or interest range. If anyone would like to see the itinerary send me a PM and I can drop you the list. I also was tracking realized prices on the items that sold while I was there..so if you want to know anything just ask!
Being a rookie I had a GREAT time and met some nice folks, I think the regulars at these auctions recognize the "new guy" and take some time to find out what it is you are interested in. I would love to take my son to one of these in the future, but I think he is still a little too young and impatient to sit through an auction.

I'd say, without the advantage of seeing the coins, that $30 to $60 would be in line. Low if the
proof sets were just average and the higher dollar if the proofs had a few pickers?
Fun, I'll bet.

Sure would like to have been there to see the better stuff sell.
I don't go to many auctions but saw one with a complete collection of Indian head cents listed.
Since I'd sold mine in the early '60s when I needed the money, I knew I had to have it if it was
in decent shape.
First announcement was the set wasn't available as the owner had died in a car crash over the weekend!
Saw a box of old post cards and stayed for them but left as soon as I'd paid for them.
Really thought I was jinxed or something. I really wanted the Indians.

I collect all 20th century series except gold including those series that ended there.
Here I am daily looking for cheap coins for my collection in the $100 to $200 dollar range and the OP is buying AU Frankilin halves. Isn't that how we all started....buying circulated coins to fill albums and then somewhere along the way we felt we were sophisticated enough to move up to more expensive coins and God forbid....plastic
Its nice to read a little bit about going back to basics and the fun shared between a father and a son while building their collection....good for you
Thanks for the note, Yes being a cardboarder I am trying to stave off the urge to get craze in the early going for high value specimens.
If 100-200 is your range you would have had a field day at this auction. What do you collect? They had a pretty broad variety IMO.
