Tough to build - grading set!

I am not throwing in the towel, but have decided to go ahead and publish my 1894o grading set. I still need the AU58 and Po01 (Po01 being by far the hardest).

What do you all think?

That's cool. Did you submit most the lower grades yourself? I see some pretty low pop's there.
  • Very cool, thanks for sharing. FWIW, that XF40 looks way under graded.

And that's the trick to building grading sets. You have to have examples that are proper for the grade. Original examples with adequate wear for the grade. A cleaned XF40 could be hiding in a VF30 holder and have better details than the VF35s out there.

Building a grading set is hard. Building an accurate and proper grading set is near impossible.

This particular grading set is very close to being perfect. The VF20 and 25 look too close in terms of wear. The XF40 has the same, if not more detail than the XF45.

Nice accomplishment so far! The AU58 should not be hard at all. I am very surprised none of them ended up being a VAM-6A (tail on the second L of DOLLAR). PO1 will be a bear.

    Nicely done!

(If I had PowerPoint or something like that here at home, I'd try to put the images in a fast slideshow, to see a sped-up overlay that could show development of wear, like in time-lapse photography. I wonder how that would look!)

    Anyway, super set!

Nice job! It's amazing that only about 3000 coins for that year have been graded across the board.

    Very cool idea. image

I thought of doing a set like that before but decided I didn't have the patience to complete it.

    Great looking group of coins.

    Very Cool!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have thought about doing the same, but as of yet I have not started.

I wonder which date would be the easiest?

I made the 2 (took 3 tries),3,4 and 50. The XF 40 is on the replacement list if I find a better example. I think it is really a 45 but the hits on the cheek perhaps lowered it. I was pretty happy with the 20 and 25 but now I have to take a closer look.

The hardest part is finding examples with even wear. Also about half way through I turned off the flash, so the later half has a different look. I will photo the beginning bunch again with no flash so that they are not "photographically" constrained.

Great job!, funny part is, its the low grades that are the hardest to find.

    Great job!

I actually put together a 1921 Peace Grade set, PO01 to MS65, again making almost all of the non-Mint Set coins. Took several years and like yourself, had a few more body bags than anticipated.

    Wow! Nice consistent look there.

I think PCGS should have a "Grade Lower" column too. image

    Well I'm certainly impressed!
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    The name is LEE!
