Just learned something new about PVC holders today.

As a coin collector I am well aware of what PVC can do to a coin. I just learned something new about PVC that I was not aware of.

Today I took some of my paper/cloth space items to a conservationist/preservationist (recommended by the De Young museum), to "neutralize"/preserve various paper items before they get put in picture frames etc. I brought the items to her house in the PVC "sleeves" they were placed in by the auction company that sold them. She mentioned to me that PVC can screw up paper that you wish to preserve. In some cases it can "strip" the ink off of the paper if it is in contact with it for any period of time. She recommended that any paper items one wanted to preserve should be in mylar "sleeves".

Now, what kinda plastic is used in picture books?
Will future generations, looking at my pictures see a washed out me?
Will my pretty mug fade away some day?
Better check to see if it's mylar.

  • You should also be sure to use matboard and foamcore of archival quality for framing. Use acid-free paper as backing. Never use cardboard as a backing in picture frames.

I have seen many pieces of collectible paper money that were saturated with PVC.
    All glory is fleeting.

PVC has oil mixed into it during its manufacturing to make the PVC soft and flexible since pure PVC is hard and brittle. What you are seeing is the oil leaching out and the paper soaking up this oil like a blotter.

Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.

The document would begin to turn varying shades of light brown usually beginning at the edges and working its way inward. The paper can also become very brittle and tends to crumble easily.

  • I've noticed this before with three ring binders. When storing papers in the front pockets, the ink printed ink from the papers always adheres to the pockets

Agreed. It would be nice if a few of the largest coin supply houses would publicly make a stand and not offer these for sale anymore.

In the end, its all fleeting whispers and dust. Such is the lot of mortal men.

Now we know why all of our GULE sniffing friends or counterparts back in the highschool days around the 70's the real reason they are all f-ed up. I couldn't understand why people do these kind of things.

My son just told me the other day he turned in a crack smoker at 6:45am under his french class portable classroom. Then just yesterday he turned in a huffer. The kid was huffing brake cleaner.
    Why or why.
