World Series Predictions

Ok fellas, who's it going to be and why

I'll take Tampa in 6. Hitting fairly even, but Phillies can't top the Rays pitching end to end. Rays will hit any Philly starter hard, except Hamels.

MVP will be Crawford for the Rays.

lol Keith I'm just busting Stevek's (well you know)

Actually I have no idea who will win this series.

Both teams are pretty good qverall.

The Rays have basically nothing to lose here and are a team
filled with number one draft picks.

I think that David Price is going to be used and may be the deciding factor here.

    Good luck to both teams.

    And most of the fans.

Vegas odds favor Rays to win Series over Phillies
By OSKAR GARCIA – 2 hours ago

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Las Vegas sports books favor the Tampa Bay Rays to win the World Series over the Philadelphia Phillies and would owe huge payouts if the American League champions prevail.

Oddsmakers say enough bettors took the Rays early in the year at long-shot prices to force books to adjust lines to encourage bets on the Phillies.

Sean Van Patten at Las Vegas Sports Consultants says the Rays are favored at minus-$1.35, meaning a gambler would need to bet $1.35 to be paid $1 if Tampa Bay wins.

Van Patten puts the Phillies at plus-$1.15, meaning a $1 bet would earn $1.15 if Philadelphia wins.

"What we're also trying to protect here is even more Tampa Bay money coming in," Van Patten said. "What we're trying to do is maybe get a little buyback on the Phillies."

Las Vegas Hilton race and sports book director Jay Kornegay says before the start of the season the Rays were a 200-1 shot for the title.

"It's a significant number for a futures book, but it's nothing that's going to shut down the book or anything," Kornegay told The Associated Press. "It might dim the lights."

Kornegay would not specify how much the Hilton sports book stood to lose if the Phillies win, but said other sports books offered even longer odds on the Rays winning a championship.

The Rays were slightly pricier at the Hilton at minus-$1.40, with the Phillies at plus-$1.20, Kornegay said.

The situation sports books are facing with the Rays is similar to 1991, when sports books lost millions of dollars on futures bets because of the Atlanta Braves and Minnesota Twins, Kornegay said. Both teams rebounded from last-place showings the year before to reach the World Series. Minnesota won the series in seven games.

"We have learned our lesson that we don't open these teams at 500-1 until the season starts and we realize what they have and what kind of team they have," Kornegay said. "This year, I'm going to guess it's probably in the millions range if you accumulate all the liability across the state."

The Rays were heavy underdogs in the American League East mainly because of high expectations for the Boston Red Sox, which swept the Colorado Rockies in the 2007 World Series, and the New York Yankees.

I like the Rays in 6. Simply put, the American League is still FAR better than the NL. Look at what Sabathia and Manny (who were having mediocre seasons) did when they went to the NL. All of the power is in the AL. Tampa Bay played in by far the toughest division in baseball, won it and then beat their nemesis in the ALCS. You have to like them in this series. Just a question of how many games. That said, I'll be rooting for the Phillies.

I'd say Rays in 6 as well. Top to bottom from #1 to #4 in the rotation, their starting pitching is just deeper and more consistent. And to me that will be the difference. And I'm assuming Hamels could win two for the Phillies.

[Edit to add: This household is rooting for the Phillies, as my wife hails from Reading. But it wouldn't devastate me if the Rays won. And I think the starting pitching is the difference.]

Rays in 6, possibly 7. Then they go back to being perinial doormats, like all other TB teams.....it is God's will, and so it must be.

But this year, THEY GET HER DONE!

Considering the "famous" CU Sports Talk Forum jinx, and "everyone" here picking the Rays, I'm changing my Phillies pick from just a lock to yes...now a mortal lock.

Will BO Sox and Yankee fan feel any better if the Rays win it all, and then you can say that you lost to the mighty WS champ? I think not, even though listening to
you all you would think so. Hamels and Myers are WAAAAAY better than anything the Rays have. Anyone want to compare Lidge to Price? Bring it on.

As the 2008 Rays are just like the Miracle Mets of 1969, I'm going to go with the same route those Mets took. Also, I think the Rays simply want it more. The Phillies will be too content with just being in their first World Series since 1993.

    Prediction: Rays in five.

That's the thing. Hamels is the only guy I trust for the Phillies right now, but if they get good starting pitching elsewhere, I'd give them the edge. I'm just not sure they'll get good enough *consistent* starting pitching.
  • I think what people tend to forget that Tampa relies much more on hitting the fastball then Boston does.
Philly has Hamels and Moyers who make their living on the off speed stuff.

I think Tampa could struggle with the Philadelphia pitchers. Not because they're better then Lester, Beckett, and Dice-K,
but because they offer a lot more change of speeds then Boston pitchers do.

I think this series will be closer then most people think.
