Where is "BOTH" as an option. Most collectors consider coin collecting as a hobby but they want their coins to increase in value over the long haul.
Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.

<< <i>Is coin collecting a hobby or investment tool for retirement? >>
For me it's a hobby. If, when all is said and done (I'm 6' under), my family ends up getting some nice cashola for my coins then all the better. If they don't, no worries, they shouldn't be relying on my coins for income anyways
If my little pile of coins ever turns out to be worth something, then I can say it was an investment. If it's in the neighborhood of breakeven, it was a hobby. If I lose a bundle, well, it will still be pretty cheap on a cost-per-hour-of-enjoyment basis.
New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

I collect all 20th century series except gold including those series that ended there.
I would have to be willing to sell my coins on a regular basis for it to qualify as an investment.
