Is coin collecting a hobby or investment tool for retirement?

It's a hobby which can pay for itself if done correctly.

Unlike R/C Planes or Cars or electric trains.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

You need to add another choice of both...

Go to Early United States Coins - to order the New "Early United States Half Dollar Vol. 1 / 1794-1807" book or the 1st new Bust Quarter book!

Both for me. Certainly not entirely one or the other.

Positive BST transactions with: too many names to list! 36 at last count.

I like Lee's answer, but I am still trying to learn to do it correctly. image

Where is "BOTH" as an option. Most collectors consider coin collecting as a hobby but they want their coins to increase in value over the long haul.

Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.

For me it's a hobby with investment potential.

A hobby. You don't buy and "investment" retail and sell it wholesale.

    Hobby.

I would have to be willing to sell my coins on a regular basis for it to qualify as an investment.

I tell myself it is an investment to justify the costs image

For me it's a hobby. If, when all is said and done (I'm 6' under), my family ends up getting some nice cashola for my coins then all the better. If they don't, no worries, they shouldn't be relying on my coins for income anyways image

If my little pile of coins ever turns out to be worth something, then I can say it was an investment.
If it's in the neighborhood of breakeven, it was a hobby.
If I lose a bundle, well, it will still be pretty cheap on a cost-per-hour-of-enjoyment basis.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
