Need some info on "Card Reviews"

Hey Fellas,

I was hoping someone out there could give me the skinny on PSA's procedures for reviewing cards. I've read their FAQs, but simply checking the "review" box and selecting a service is not very telling. For instance, will it cost me the same amount of money to submit 50 cards for grading, as it does to submit 50 graded cards for review? Also, when PSA graders review the cards, do they crack the slabs and reholder them when finished -- regardless of whether or not the card received a higher/lower grade? I only ask that because they never seem to need to crack open a GAI holder to tell me that the card WON'T qualify for a lateral crossover. Any info on this procedure would be greatly appreciated. If you sending cards in for review, looking for the half grade bump, you need to submit at SMR value. Lets say you have a 1961 PSA 7 mantle. You submit it under a PSA 7 value (lets say $600) the card must go in to PSA under the Express level, 5 day turnaround and at $35 a card. And yes, PSA should crack and put in a new holder with a flip where the numeral grade is below the written grade like here. Even if the grade remains the same. This way anyone can tell is the card has been submitted for a bump in grade or if the card has been graded recently.

Treetop...I thought cards submitted for "review" were left in their original holders. Did that change as there was a lot of discussion about it when the half point grading change came into affect???

Only cards that get the bump get reholdered from what I understand.

the ones I sent in a few months ago all received new flips. Same serial numbers, but the ones that stayed the same had the grade set like my linked example

They can break PSA cards out of the holder to take a closer look at them if they need to. If they then see something they don't like for the bump they can simply reholder the card at the same grade. They can't do that to a card when it's in a holder from another grading company. They have to be 100% sure the card will cross before breaking it out. If the holder obstructs something they need to see in the grading process they won't take a chance breaking it out. If they were able to view the card raw maybe it cross with no problem. But they can't see what they need to see so it gets rejected. If you break out and submit raw they're able to view the entire card when grading.

Tree you may be correct, at first they were going to re holder only those cards that would bump.

Then after a bruhaha Joe stated that all cards under review would get new holders, thus new certs.

That way people could tell if it had in fact been sent in.


I think I read that somewhere.

I assume you are talking about a crossover and not a review?

If a person cracks out a card that he wished to review the card is no longer
guaranteed the same grade.

I know you know this KB I am just making sure the OP understands.

Once cracked out the card starts all over.

Guys...it this is true then your better off sending in for "review" rather than cracking and sending raw. If you crack and send in raw the grade can go up or down. If you send in for "review" the grade can only go up.

No, it could also stay the same. The whole benefit of the review process was the fact that no card
would be down graded.

Hey Steve,

I just wanted to make sure that I understood the information that you provided me with. So, each card sent in for review will be cracked so that the new serial number/flip can denote that the card had been resubmitted, right? Also, a grading fee will be charged regardless of whether or not the card recieves a higher numerical value, correct? Thanks again for your info.

I sent in 6 cards for a review about a month ago- only 2 out of the 6 received the .5 bumps however the other 4 remained in the origanal holder with NO change to the flip or cert #.

To answer your 2 questions:

1....I am almost positive, at first they were not re holdering cards that did not bump, that was changed so the cert number stays the same yet
it appears different.


2.......Yes you pay whatever tier price the card is in regardless if it bumps or not.

Paul that was what I thought, however someone in this thread claims otherwise.

I too was under the impression that only cards that were bumped got new holders.

I suggest that the OP call PSA and simply ask.


I don't send cards in for bumps so It does not concern me.


I get them graded, move them and move on to the next batch.

I sent in 3 cards and 1 got a .5 bump. That was the only one that was reholdered. Unless this has changed, this is the way it works. Also, you pay the fee per card no matter what.

Yeah the didn't reholder my reviews at the National. I think it might come down to a cost issue.
