State Quarter Collectors(preferably the ones putting together albums!)

Are you seeing any nice toning in the albums??? I have a few books I am doing from the circulated examples I receive in everyday change...and I am seeing nice color on many of them. A few of the "more toned" are the Kansas and the Nevada....which surpise me a bit since the many of the earlier dates have been in the books a lot longer! Just wanted to see the responses. Of course I am assuming that anyone else on the forum is collecting non-certified, non-proof stuff these days! imageimage

I have them in Dansco's and some of the proofs started to turn an ugly brown color.

I will check on my MS album tonight (plan on picking up the Alaska's today), but I do not recall any of them toning when I have looked at them in the past.

  • I haven't bought an album yet for my uncircs, they are still sitting in 2X2's I suppose I should be getting a Dansco. My circs are in one of those generic 2 book quarter albums, and I am not noticing any toning on them.

  • I don't have any in albums, but I have 200+ mint-wrapped rolls, and some of them are turning a golden color on the ends. I keep them in 50-compartment storage boxes.

I'm not meaning for them to tone, but I keep them in a small safe in the clothes closet. I wonder if that could be "accelerating" the process? image
  • I have had silver turn ugly from keeping it in one of those Sentry fireproof safes, it was one of those 1 ounce bars I was given when I graduated, so it could have been in there for up to 20 years. I think I read that the fireproofing in them contains moisture, or something to that effect.

After starting two Harris albums, there is some gold periphery toning on some of the coins in the one I kept. Sold the other on eBay a year or two ago. The Whitman folders are also showing some signs of toning after 9 years and haven't purchased any more from the mint. Missing last 7 states and a mint roll of South Carolina P and Maryland P to be complete.

I put all of mine in the Dansco with proof albums last year. So far not toning. The MS coins all came from mint sets, I would imagine the satin finish tones differently than the regular circulation finish.

Have you tried putting them in the hamper with your dirty underwear?

I have two Whitman folders going with the kids, and we just pull coins out of circulation. None of them are getting toned. In a 1,000 years there may be some etched thumbprints on them from sticking them in the folders, though.

Thumbprints are admissible in court aren't they??? image
  • I've been keeping a Whitman Deluxe Edition state quarter folder, and I've been somewhat disappointed at the soft golden tone that all of my quarters seem to be taking on. I liked the shiny, silver luster they all started with.

As I mentioned in a much earlier post, each of my sons has, among other types, a large, 8x10 tri-folder from "CheckerBee Publishing" that holds P & D versions of each state quarter, in alphabetical order.

While just finishing putting in the last of the '08 coins, I noticed that, while they still appear very shiny & new looking back a few years, the quarters from some of the earliest years are taking on a more "silvery" appearance! If I didn't know better, my first impression would be that they look like shiny versions of 1964 silver quarters!

Anyone else noticing this, or have an explanation? They've been untouched by human hands since they went into the folders, primarily straight out of bank rolls.....

I have a circulation set in the cheapie fold whitman books.
I've noticed some all over golden color on quite a few of the early ones.

    Yes.
I have one album from Tangerine Press that has space for 50 coins and some very subtle but beautiful toning has been imparted to all the coins dated 2004 or earlier.

Virginia, Indiana, Connecticut, Vermont, North Carolina are my favorites in this album. Blue champagne toning.
I'm not a good enough photographer to image this toning.

  • Yep me too...

I have two sets, the first one is for my son and shows no toning at all. The second one only shows toning in the 2005 and 2006 issues. On that page I have siginfiicant toning happening.

I have not bought a safe in around 15 years , but I do remember the directions said to open it and let it air out for a few hours a week. (obviously when your home)
  • I use Dansco album and have noticed many of the coins are staring to show a golden tone.

I have mine in a Littleton folder and yes, they ARE toning. Mostly a ugly yellowish brown. Some more then others...I don't remember which one but one of them far more then the rest. I don't know why.

They take on a yellowish tinge after being in there for about a week. It seems to be more affecting the later (2002-current) coins more then the earlier ones, which pretty much just turned yellow and then stopped.

  • My Dansco has all uncirculated state quarters and only the Delaware quarter has some brown spot on it. It also has the slipcase on it.

That rainbow quarter sure does look sweet. How did that one tone so nicely? image

My Statehood Quarter Set has taken on some incredible color. All coins came from Mint Sets and Proof Sets. What is interesting to note is that NONE of the silver coins toned, and the only proof coins that toned were 1999's.

Mine-proofs of both silver and copper-nickel and regular business strikes are in several old Meghrig "Quarters-plain" albums and are toning very nicely-especially the business strikes. I give those a quick dip to remove any contaminants before putting them in the album.
