Selling coins is hard work!!! (crybaby post, don't read)

Dog97Dog97 Posts: 7,874 ✭✭✭
I see people selling stuff on the BST Board and think, "Man, that's an easy way to make $$$$ without fooling with sleazeBay or getting shanked by the local old school dealer" who has no idea what a PCGS slab means and why he should pay top $$ for them when his inventory consists of circulated Morgans in cardboard 2x2's and his biggest coin is a PCI Red Label 09-S-VDB in cleaned VF.

You dealers & powersellers make it look so easy.

So I thought I'd try it, to get rid of some extra stuff and I need some $$$ for something else I want.

For smoe strange reason I thought other collectors would find my stuff as valuable & desirable as I do and be beating down my door wanting to buy it.

Rounding up pictures, processing them to meet the 50kb board limit (I don't have my own website to host) trying to give them a file name so I can easily find them in the upload box, then having to view the pict and click on the 'properties" then C&P the properties to put them in the thread using the board html is about to drive me batty! Then I can't find the picture after I upload it, put the wrong picts in the wrong ad, correct typos, delete sold coins, add ***PENDING** to coins that people have commited on but not paid yet, I'm wearing out the "edit" button, trying to sort out PM's, keep track of offers & counteroffers, trying to match members board id's with names on paypal payments that magically appear in my email account, man it's mind boggling!!!!

I have the same problems when I sell stuff on the bay. Last time I sold anything on eBay was 2 years ago; my ole lady went in the hospital the same night I listed 10 $1,000 coins, a week later when the auctions went off she died the same day. Money kept pouring into my PayPal account from prompt buyers and I know they didn't care about hearing any excuses so I remained responsible & dependable to my buyers and mailed everything the next day even though eBay & the Post Office was the least of my worries. Least nobody died this time.

But last Sunday my internet crashed and it took my ISP 3 days to fix it. Something about a dsl box gone bad & losing a port & multiple ip addresses. Right now I'm scared if I shut my puter down it won't work for another 3 days.

Then you got people like stman; I sent him a FREE coin once cause I know he really liked & wanted it and he warned me that I'd best not smash the sticky on the safe-t-mailer so hard that he couldn't re-use it & also asked me if he didn't like it in hand could he return it and would I pay his return postage.

Which btw, I'm running out of good used safe-t-mailers and are having to use old tore up ones, put in an emergency order on eBay the other night, it cost me $20 for 30 brand new safe-t-mailers using a BIN. If I buy anything from you would you kindly not smash the sticky together so hard that I can't reuse it? Those things are expensive!! First time in my life I ever bought a safe-t-mailer.

Now I see why you dealers & powersellers are cranky & rude all the time!! Being a dealer sure aint nothing I would want to do for a living. I'd rather dig ditches or ride on the back of a garbage truck!!

Yeah I know, wahh wahh call the wahbulance and "Here's a Quarter, call someone who cares."
Back to my cave now.

I agree and have one word of advice for you:

  • LOL, I thought I wanted to sell for extra profit too a while back. I now only do one set of auctions a month on ebay, use paypal shipping and have a little system down to get through from pictures to packaging, but I know what you mean, I wouldn't want to do it for a living.

By the way, www.photobucket.com is a good FREE place that you can use to host pictures, and you don't have to worry about the 50K CU file size limit.

Try Photobucket, or other image hosting site for uploading images. It's really quite easy and not much of a hassel.

I do feel your pain that it is a lot of work being a dealer/seller of coins.

Set up a free photo account at imageshack.us or photobucket or any of the others.
Quick, pretty easy to use, and don't worry about the same size limits.

The rest of the issues....well, I would never complain about a free coin image

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I feel the pain. These statehood quarters are not moving so good.

  • << <i>I agree and have one word of advice for you:

10-4. I guy I know consigned a bunch of coins to Russ. The auction ended last Saturday and he said the auctions went way better than he expected. I've thought about doing the same thing but I like futzing with the eBay process. I take horrible, crappy pictures and that probably hurts me.

    Edited for grammar.

  • Sorry to read the sad part of your post.

I did change my mood when I read:

<<Then you got people like stman; I sent him a FREE coin once cause I know he really liked & wanted it and he warned me that I'd best not smash the sticky on the safe-t-mailer so hard that he couldn't re-use it & also asked me if he didn't like it in hand could he return it and would I pay his return postage.>>

    That part cracked me up!

Well I panicked when I realized I would soon be mailing coins wrapped in paper towels and cut up Snickers boxes! So I bought this, cheapest of the 3 deals on eBay Text Not like I got an abundance of coin supply shops here in Lower Abalama and Office Depot aint got them. Oh well...

Heh Heh, Yeah, that was a nice coin. Good thing I didn't need to send back that FREE coin!!!! Hey, now before you starting selling recently, I bought a coin from you after long negotiations. You gave me a price shipped. I not only paid that but paid extra for the Paypal fees, and I believe there was enough to also get a snack of some sort on your way to PO to mail it. Maybe a snickers bar(sorry, I don't buy lunch) but it was something.

No, you don't mention that. But I guess all your other sales on the board they all offered to pay extra. You big dealers are all the same. image

I once bought a coin from a prominent dealer (before he was in the biz) that came wrapped in toilet paper. But it was OK, the next coin I bought was upgraded to paper towels. True story!

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Actually, I did voluntarily pay a little extra to cover Dog's paypal fees. image

I did have a great transaction with Dog, I didn't notice if he used a new mailer or not though. image

BTW, that FREE coin big Dog sent me he even insured it with the USPS. Not even on a free coin did he go in the insurance binness and "self insure."
Now maybe he hoped it would get lost, but still...image

edit, I think he did anyway. I know the one I just bought was insured as it should have after the long negotiations we went through.

stman don't try to derail my personal crying thread with your own good deeds.
I am happy to pay PayPal 3% to get the $$$ into my grubby little hands as quickly as possible and have never asked anybody to pay extra for MY convienance. True, nobody else has ever even offered though, you were the first, and I was impressed.

edited to add: oops, zeus135 did kick in a little something too the other day and I thought that was nice of him.
You guys don't have to do that though. I don't do this for a living so I don't need to squeeze every single red cent possible from what I sell.

Hey man, sorry, whine on. Hey, and thanks for not sticking the safety mailer too tight, I used it to send a coin to a dealer. But I pressed it tight, and taped it shut with black duct tape. The fish guy told me no more black tape for me. Hahaha

image Thanks for the great post!! Especially the part about the saf-t-mailers, not closing them too tight!

I've been selling a lot this fall and had to BIN on Saf-t-mailers myself a few weeks ago myself after all the re-cycles were exhausted. Vernon coin, #50 for $15--something like that. Ouch!

Thanks again for the laugh and all the truth in there about the different type of work/hassles involved!

    1. I had a buyer last week, EvilEmpire, add a couple of bucks to cover my PayPal fees. This despite my admitting to her that I am a Met fan.

    2. I sucked it up a few years ago and bought a 500ct box of Saf-T Mailers. I still have about 450 of them left. If you guys get stuck short on supplies again drop me a PM and I'll hook you up.

    Hey, Dog!

Yeah, it's gotten worse in recent years. I'd saved up a whole file draw of used mailers from decent Americans who just lightly touched the corners. The ones I've gotten the last few times, though, look like somebody sealed them with a ball hammer. I had to tear them in half to get the coin out.

The world's going to the Dogs. And I don't mean that in a good way. image

c'mon Dog...........I can't make it any easier for ya bud ! Paid the shipping, told you how to pack and to drop off at the PO (didn't even have to stand in line) got you a check within 5 days (much faster that STMAN's check)image and you still trying ebay..........go for it ! image

and STMAN........if you EVER use black tape again I'm coming to Cali for ya bud ! It took me 30 minutes (must have been 4-5 rolls of black taped used) to find and surgically remove the coin with a 6 inch buck knife as the large express mail box was full of BLACK TAPE ! be cheaper to buy the mailers than use the black tape like STMAN ! imageimage

You can always just send it to me to sell. I don't mind the grunt work and can use all the consignments I can get. image

What is more frustrating is when you take the time to FIND truly nice attractive coins and people get pissed that it's not "greysheet" price. Hah. Go find one as nice for around greysheet and sell it for a profit to someone with the same "greysheet" mindset. Do this a couple thousand times every few months to feed your family and I guarantee that you will reach a higher understanding of what dealers go through.

I had a trading buddy and we'd use the same package over and over
week after week like a hot potato until it got so thread worn it would
have to be replaced. We'd just switch the shipping labels over and ov-
er until it was time for a new package.

And he'd complain if my stamps got cancelled. image

I can relate to your pain...

I purchase new one at an office supply store. When you get a whole bunch they are pretty cheap. I do reuse when I can, too. If I use priority I use the free post office boxes.
