Recommendations on European Gold coin book?

Hello fellow coin crusaders,

What is the best book out there for the German 10 and 20 mark, Napoleons, sovereigns, swiss franc gold, austria gold, etc where the nuances of the coins are described and what to watch out for in regards to reproductions and fakes. Give me the book title, author or maybe ISBN so I can see if Amazon.com has a used copy for sale.

Thank you all for reading this thread.

  • I did a quick ebay search and found this. I can not speak for the book or the seller.

    DeutscherGeist,

I don't know of a single book that will have all the information your looking for particuliarly "what to watch out for in regards to reproductions and fakes". I think your going to have to build a library of various reference books. I'd start with a minimum of these two
"Standard Catalog of World Gold Coins - 5th Edition" ( Krause and Mishler) and "Gold Coins of The World - 7th edition" (Arthur and Ira Friedberg)

I can't recall any books other than the standards that deal with that, but thought I'd chime in with this...

If you're looking for cheap used books online there is a lot more out there than Amazon! BookFinder4U is one of the better search tools. It scours not only Amazon, but 130 other online stores. By way of example, here is a search for the new Krause, in which case Amazon actually does have the lowest price.

This is some nice starting points. Even the search tool for books is going to be helpful in terms of saving money.

Correct me if I am wrong, but the new Krause catalog will have prices/values on world coins. Even though those values often fluctuate, the book is still valuable because it gives the AGW on gold coins, which is information that does not change. So, old Krause catalogs can be worthwhile long after their printed coin values become outdated?
