One more time...

RayboRaybo Posts: 5,343 ✭✭✭✭✭
I have posted this coin before and have recieved no answers about my question, so here I go again.

Does anyone see the phantom "1" to the right of the date?
Could it be post mint?

The "1" is raised above the surface but i'm a rank amature when it comes to stuff like this, I hope my image is good enough to get some opinions. image

Thanks in advance,

Ray

I see it for sure but I wouldn't hazard a guess.
I'm curious to hear any comments.

its to the left of the first 1. Slightly higher. Im usually a paper person but i used to dabble in coins a few years ago. I probably am seeing things or seeing a dirt stain that looks like a 1 but here is what i see

I see the same thing. But, I also saw what atarian saw before he posted it. Maybe it is just because I was looking for phantom numbers, but I saw something to the left of the date before something to the right of the date.
  • Is this your coin? If so, take a closer pic.

<< <i>So why hasn't anybody spoken about the more obvious "1" to the right of the entire date, unless I am missing something like that is already very obvious? >>

No idea..............I tried once before and no responce. image

<< <i>That is interesting, what is more interesting to me is the phantom one as you call it to the right of the second "1" in the date, please comment on that one (no pun intended).image

Cool coin by the way. >>

The "1" to the right is what I have been asking about all along! image

1000 posts, time for a give away!

    image
  • I can certainly see what I believe to be a 1 on the right but there seems to be some sort of image on the left.

    Possible a letter......maybe a "D"?

    Very nice coin.
I checked Breen's encyclopedia of US Coins and also his Encyclopedia of Half cents. This coin is mentioned in both books. There is no nickname for this coin in either book (such as a Phantom 1 or a Ghost 1). He basically called it a part of a third 1 to right of date weakly visible.

I see a strong base of the one to the right of the date with some faint detail of the rest of the one.

I looked and did not find any attribution numbers on this in my Breen encyclopedia and in Cherrypickers.

All 1851 half cents have the extra "1" digit to the right of the date.
