Opinions needed on rare McGwire piece

A new auction on ebay has a pretty rare piece that I'd like to own (if it is in fact what the seller says it is), but would like some opinions. He claims it is a 1987 Barry Colla uncut sheet that has been autographed by McGwire. After looking at the photos in the auction, it appears (at least to me) that the piece is in fact a computer printout of the 10 card set, and not the actual uncut sheet. What do you think? The original set was very high quality, almost as if they were developed pictures, instead of printed baseball cards. Here is a scan of what the fronts and backs look like on the original set, as well as the link to the auction.

    I agree...looks funky
  • If it was the scanner responsible for the grainy pictures, wouldnt the autograph look grainy as well? At least where it crosses over the white area from picture to picture?

Atleast he got one thing right

    It's not a cheap copy - it's $79.95
  • I'll jump all over the price any day of the week, but dont want to buy it just for the auto. I want it to be an actual uncut sheet of Barry Colla cards, not a print of the cards. Im debating just buying it, and if its not what he says it is, I'll go through the return process with paypal. What do you think?

    Dear The Mcgwire Museum,

I did some copying and pasting via Photoshop and made the image below. If you look at your image of the "ROOKIE ADVERTISING CARD #1", you can see what appears to be a faint circle logo. It looks like the A's logo. If you look at the one in the auction, there is no logo, faint or otherwise. This is, of course, assuming you can get past the low quality of the lettering. I would pass.

I would find out what the seller has to say and if he would allow you to return it if it isn't what you are hoping it is. Maybe the seller can get you a better quality scan. If it is that rare you will be kicking yourself for not giving it a chance.

  • JackWESQ, good eye. I didn't notice that. I have been messaging the seller, and he's saying all the right things, but I just cant convince myself it really is an uncut sheet.

The seller is offering a money back guarantee and his feedback is 100% with over 4000 transactions. If this was something that you really wanted, I'd get it, inspect in person and then decide what you want to do (seems like a low risk proposition to me).

Ill wait to see what he says about the missing A's logo on the backs of the cards. I hope he doesn't just ignore my last couple of questions and hope somebody else buys it, as I'd really like to own this if its real.

I agree. Seller has good feedback and you seem to understand the Pay Pal return thing....together equal low risk.

Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.
  • Also, if it is fake, you will have it hand and can document it before returning it....worth the hassle of returning and short term tie up of funds I imagine.

  • Well, I couldn't wait any longer and pulled the trigger. He never got back to me on my last couple of questions, but the moneyback guarantee convinced me to just give it a shot. Im 90% convinced I'm going to end up returning it, but Im hoping for the best.

Jack I totally agreed with this statement before, but I was scrolling through the topic again, and then the logo on his scan was visible now. You have to look very very closely, but after a little bit it does appear to be there (its the faint faint yellow ring seen in the middle). Im hoping its real and just a really, REALLY crappy scan

    Dear The McGwire Museum,

What I've discovered may SUPPORT the authenticity of the uncut sheet. If you go to the auction, and place the mouse cursor over the uncut sheet, right click, go to "Properties", you see the web address for the image is:

    http://www.geocities.com/von2325/MAC02A.jpg

So went to the website and, of course, the image of the uncut sheet appeared. I then deleted the "MAC02A.jpg" which left only http://www.geocities.com/von2325. Click on that and you get the seller's Parent Directory of approximately 2700 images (presumably all auction images). From there, I clicked on some of the larger images, e.g. greater than 100k. Some examples are below. Essentially, all his scans are poor. So this may bode well for the McGwire uncut sheet. As for the legitmacy of the autograph? Who knows.

  • Well, I got the piece in the mail yesterday, and am VERY pleased it is indeed an uncut sheet! His scans were just really, really bad. This probably has become my favorite item in my collection. The autograph is late 1988/early 1989. It would have been cool to see one of these with his rookie signature, circa 1987, but I still love it, and am very happy with the price. I would have paid the $80 just for the uncut sheet. The autograph is just a bonus.
