After the 15 minutes past I checked the website and the auction for the item mentioned was gone, I checked my email - none, I checked my auction status and it indicated that I had neither won any auctions in the last two days nor lost any in the last two days. Is it possible that they pulled the set just prior to the auctions end - I think I was about to get a good deal - $450? Has this ever happen to anyone else?

If it was ebay, it is likely that the auction was in violation for something and it could have been nuked by ebay. In this case, check your email and see if there is something from ebay about it.
If ebay did nuke it, you won't find the auction.
