Bring on the '81 Fleers. Craig Nettles, Triple Threat no #, the little finger pointing icon on some cards, wrong #'s, and the list goes on...This will be fun.
I love this thread so I thought I would throw mine in too. I have 2 racks with Ripken on top, one FF and BB but do not feel like pulling them out of their storage cases and scanning. Here are the ungraded Ripkens I have. I also have a PSA 9 and 10 Black Scribble on their way back from PSA.
Unlike Donovan, my biggest obsession with this set is the Randy Johnson variations. Rookie of Hall of Famer with different variations, how can you beat that for modern cards?
You may not be able to tell from the scans, but there are 4 different variations shown in pic.
Top left is Ad partially obscured. Top right is black box covering ad. Bottom left is full Marlboro ad. Bottom right is total blackout. There are also 2 variations of the partially obscured, red tint and green tint. I have the green tint on it's way back from PSA but PSA does not yet recognize the color variations.
ok, so I busted my second box from my Higbees case last night and it was just as predicted earlier. No Ripkens. I did nab a Griffey in this box and 2 more Johnsons. I have resigned that the last box will not contain a Ripkin either, but another Griff would be nice. Not that I'm going to the bank or anything, but I have gotten 4 Ryan's as well. I never realized how few superstars were really in this set. Even if I don't get a Ripken or another Griffey, it has been fun to bust em' the last couple of nights after puttin' the wife and kid to sleep. Now, my only delima is what the hell do I do with all these friggin' 89 Fleer cards that aren't worth crap? I might just burn them or throw them away. I figure the more I get rid of, the fewer will be around and I'll drive the price up for the rest of you! I'll post results of the 3rd box sometime soon!
I have (3) 5000 count boxes filled with 1989 Fleer and about 3 or 4 stacks of them sitting on the floor in my closet. One of these days I am going to organize them and make about 10 sets and sell them on eBay for $15 each. So, after eBay fees Paypal fees and shipping costs, I will make about $4 per set. I will be rich.
I have a new obsession. I want one rack pack with every variation in the set showing on top. Stupid Guillermo Hernandez and his stupid spot showing on top is actually what got me started on this new obsession.
<< <i>That brings up a good question. What do you guys do with all of the commons? >>
I was literally up to about 4 cases worth of commons, so when the Yankees played their last game at The Stadium I had some friends over for a bbq. Burned about half of them in our firepit as a sacrifice.
You'll remember the Yankees won the game... athankyouverymuch.
<< <i>the black box version are pretty much worthless right? >>
Yes, unless they are on top of a rack or cello or in a PSA 10 holder or you have about 20 of them. >>
Sell me your FF rack !!
I can throw in a Marlboro red and green !!
Even the BBox on rack is nothing special
BBox in a 10 is $20
BBox racks sell for $5-10 >>
WTF? I just sold you a BBox rack for $1k and even through in a second one since the price was way too good to pass up. Don't be pretending that these racks w/Ripken aren't gold mines.
Hahaha. These are fun to rip. I don't have a clue on these cards. I just like the fact that my daughters have helped me rip these cards. I built a second guest house with all the commons that I have. A few more cases and the man-cave will be complete. lsutigers1973 - I'll send you one of my rare Randy Johnson black out w/booger variation to round out your set.
Ok guys. What's the next poorman's rip? 1981 Fleer or Donruss? Or are we sticking to 1989 Fleer racks until our little group depletes everyones inventory. I'm getting a 1989 Fleer unopened wax case from a guy in Washington. If I find Ripken, I'll re-seal it and send it to Donovan for his collection.

The UD Witt black box is like Bigfoot. I've seen a lot of posts stating they've seen this and "let me go check, I think I've saved a scan from a previous post" messages pop up occasionally on some boards, but they never seem to find that picture.....

WOW, I had to go out last night, came back this morning and boy has this thread strayed.....IT was supposed to be FLEER FRIDAY....come one, get with the program everyone.......and are you honest when you say the black box ripken in PSA 10 sells for $20????? I need to get them in plastic quick!!
I just cracked a GAI 8 glossy Ripken and subbed to PSA - came back a 9. Was glad to get it!
And you're talking about the Dipkin promo that was the show giveaway, not the one that came in the comic, right? >>
Correct. Only seen 1 or 2 on the market. My buddy won one for a few hundred. Slightly different than the comic one and pics on br.com Wish I had shows to go to around here, as I bet you could find one eventually for cheap by a unknowledgable seller.
Wow a glossy 9. Unsure on the PSA pop report but that's the 1st one I have heard of and only 1 BGS 9 that should of been mine. I need to upgrade mine.
I just re-read my previous post. Didn't try to come off as being bothered by people busting 89 Fleer. I like when people do. I get to know what's out there. Only recently have I been able to afford to bust cases and that $ is almost gone. BTW I just won a 6 box wax case. No stars will be showing, so it's not as special to me. But cool as I've only seen these 6 box cases listed twice in 5 years.
alnavman- Fleer Friday. Next year, the 20th Anniversary, we can flood the board with FFFF ( Fleer Friday F Face) posts every Friday until the word FF is banned here. lol For the 20th anniversary I wish they would make a card auto'd by Bill. Add a Special inscription, something like in his own words. Have the auto on a pic of a bat knob......I need to get out more.

Gotcha. I have yet to see one for sale - only scans of them from collections. You're probably right though... I bet they're out there and simply overlooked by unknowledgable collectors.
I was very happy with the 9. Especially for coming out of a GAI 8 holder. Only problem is PSA labeled it "Fleer" instead of "Fleer Glossy". They offered to fix it so I'm sending it back this week for relabel.
Finally opened my last box from the case today. It did not yield a Bill Ripken of any kind. Heck... I can't even put together a set! Anyway, the last box did provide two more Griffey's and one more Johnson. Haven't looked for any other errors, so the total yield on good cards from this break is as follows:
3 -- Griffey's 5 -- Johnson's (including one on the front of a rack) 0 -- Ripken FF Enough commons to keep the house warm deep into January!
After paying about $52 after the microsoft discount, I think I break just about even ..... if I find a $50 bill laying on the ground. It was fund though!
My last rack case arrived today. Black box. About $350 spent on 6 rack cases in the past few weeks and I'll get back about $100 ( I could bust all the packs and try to slab and flip but that's not really my thing) I'll have 3 racks with BBox on top to keep. Worth the try though.
I can't wait to get my wax case next week. I can't wait to see how many Griffey, Johnson and Ripkens it will yield. With my luck, I'll get a clean front, rare version FF, but on the back will be a huge wax stain on it....
<< <i>That brings up a good question. What do you guys do with all of the commons? >>
I know what someone can do with one of them. I'm in need of a PSA 10 #324 Brett Butler. If one of you has one that you're pretty sure will grade out and wanted to include it in their next sumission, I'll forward the grading fee.

20 box wax case? I'm scared of those and now cello, thanks to possibly being owned at one time by Stephaniesclosetcollctables and a good chance of resealing.
Even with a stain, I know of a few rare versions would still sell well. At least I know of myself and 2 others who would pay.
Similar story. I found a really rare version. Only one I have seen. Mispelled title and left out the right keywords. Seller was not a collector or dealer. Won it for like $3 shipped. Shipping was $1 and knew it would be poorly shipped but I was afraid to bring any attention to it because- fear they would back out of the deal....it was only $3 and maybe they thought if they tried again they could do better or would wonder why I was so worried and research into it. So I rolled the dice. Came in a PWE with 2 creases that were caused in the mail. Bummer, but still happy to have it. I would of paid alot for it, creased or not.

Saw that your Jay Buhner pic had what looked like a period before his position on front. Searching through my stash i've found 3 with the mark and 3 without so far. I also found 2 CHris Brown with spot above position and 3 without. Are these another Boggs with and without spot type variations?
I just checked all of my Buhner's & Brown's. I have about 60 of them each. All of my Buhner's have the print mark while none of my Brown's do.
There most definitely are a bunch of unlisted variations in the 1989 Fleer set. Some of them appear to be quite scarce. I've been compiling a master list of these unlisted variations for several months now. I plan to post the results of my findings on this forum very soon. I'll be sure to add the Buhner & Brown variations to the list.
