Ebay/paypal percentage figures

derrybderryb Posts: 37,969 ✭✭✭✭✭
Thought I'd re-evaluate the fees I pay to do business on ebay. In the past I used the standard 6% figure (actual figure was 5.9%) to estimate my profit at different sales senarios.

Just took my first look at the actual figures with the new ebay fee schedule in place. Both items were a "buy it now:"

Sale price: $1095
ebay fees: 65.30
paypal fee: 32.49
Final cost : 8.93%

Sale price: $ 525
ebay fees 34.90
paypal fee: 15.82
Final cost: 9.66%

Cost of doing business is going up! image

Still fairly cheap for such a big audience.

Not sure where your numbers came from, but here's what it would be if I sold the same coins using 10 day auction format:

    Sale price: $1095
    ebay fees: 32.63
    paypal fee: 24.39
    Final cost : 5.21%

    Sale price: $ 525
    ebay fees 17.29
    paypal fee: 11.85
    Final cost: 5.55%

Russ, I don't sell on ebay but thought about it. Why do you suppose his fees are so much higher than yours?

There are more fees if you list an item with the "Buy Now" feature. So its cheaper on the seller to list in an auction format. image

Have noticed to. With that 30% off deal still going on, with buy it now, the buyers do not seem to mind paying the extra fees, built in the price. As soon as it stops,so will alot of buyers, will go with the auction format, with a high start price or reserve

I list using the least cost option, 99c no reserve. I also get discounts on the final value fees, and pay merchant rates with PayPal.

Been burnt too many times for the .99 cent sales. I have sold coins for $60 and seen them resold 2 weeks later for over $200. It is very risky.

That way when you build your shipping fees into your price, ebay can get a cut of that! image

    Not for Russ, he's a power seller!!!image
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

  • When ebay went public a few years ago, I told my wife they'd have to start increasing their earnings
to satisfy all the new shareholders and the board of directors.
Buying paypal and raising fees for services and adding services sure did the job!

I figure it something like this:
    Sale price: $1095
    ebay fees: 65.30
Actual cost of $1095 coin sold: $1,500
Cost & aggrevation up uploading wrong pictures: $50
Cost & aggrevation of answering emails: $50
Cost of rooting thru trash to find used packing material & boxes: $50
Cost of stopping at beerjoint on way to Post Office: $50
Cost & aggrevation of explaining to postal clerk why a #10 envelope is insured for $5k : $50
Cost & aggrevation of repacking item cause you can't send a bubble mailer "Registered": $50
Cost & aggrevation of having to cash $2,000 money from Bank of Nigeria and mail buyer $1,000 change back.
    paypal fee: 32.49
    Final cost : 8.93%
So it usually costs me almost $3,000 to sell a $1095 coin.
    Final cost: 300%
On the bright side; it's only a hobby to help me relax & enjoy life! Cost: PRICELESS
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

Plus, a lot of the stuff his sells are consigments and not his. However, he does have a big following!

Unless you lost money on that $60 sales price, it is irrelevant what someone sells it for later.....you did not get "burnt" for selling something for a lesser price than it sold for later.
Many people have different "followers" on ebay. Some trust certain sellers more. They pay more for it. They see something at a different time.

Now, if you paid $200 and sold it for $60, then you would have been burned.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
