Is this a leget vatiety ?, or is it a rip-off? I'm just getting into MDs, so I don't know about things that arn't listed in the RED BOOK. image

    VAMs are only for silver dollars of the 1878-1935 Period (ie Morgans and Peace, but not Trade)

    Mercs have plenty of dates that have doubling, especially in the mintmark and date. Very common and there
    are no VAMs but lots of varieties. Not worth a premium with a few exceptions like 42/41 etc.
    Don't go there until you know a bit more, at least don't pay a premium for any.

    As as been stated VAMs refer only to Morgan and Peace dollars. The coin this uninformed seller has listed is almost certainly a machine or strike doubled coin that is worth NO premium. Other than the 1942/41 varieties and a purported 1936/29-S there are no really nice doubled dies in the series that I am aware of.

    VAM comes from Van Allen and Maris who wrote the definitive book on Morgan and Peace silver dollar varieties.
