can you think of another time when a top tier TPG graded a replica stamped with COPY?

    Edit:

Didn't read the label, but I still don't know why it's in an NGC slab.

Can someone please enlighten me as to
A.) why this coin is in an NGC slab, and
B.) why is it "hand inscribed" and then certified?

    my attempt at some answers:
    a) no idea.....that's why i find this piece so amusing!
    b) looking under magnification i can see that this "coin" itself is not inscribed but rather produced as a replica transfer from the original inscribed coin......in other words, the words WAR 1861 are not etched onto this coin

Thanks for the input. What an esoteric numismatic item!

It's an 'Authorized Replica" of a 'hand inscribed' coin.

Is that a Chinese Fake NGC slab?

    Hmmmm
Guess it's a token but who authorized it and who made it?

I thought it looked way too good for a shipwreck coin and was kinda peeved that it doesn't look anything like the coins I picked up from the SS Republic, THEN i read the word "copy" and was somewhat glad. image

    What numismatic filth!
This certainly puts their heading "Your home for authentic shipwreck treasures" to shame!

If that is a genuine NGC slab, then that is disturbing.

I don't like these, but then again PCGS marketed the SS Central America copies after gold bars recovered from the wreck were melted and used to produce transfer copies.

Good point. I wasn't crazy about those, either, but you get used tohese things after a while.

    How about without?

Even I as a vigorous anti-slabber find this even wrong from a pro-slab viewpoint.

(It is, of course, also very collectible.)
