Why would a coin you have in go in the registry under a different cert #?

I have a 1883-O morgan that I wanted to add to my inventory just to have it in, it is lower than my registry set coin so not looking it in the registry, just inventory. I kept getting an invalid cert message so I took the coin with me to Long Beach. I saw a rep their who said the coin and holder looked legit and to email him the info. I was told the coin had been reholdered (it is in an OGH right now) and had a new cert number to enter. I entered it and into my registry went a 1857-s $20 saint valued at 10k, definitely no the same coin. I let PCGS know what happened and now they have corrected it to show the right coin using the other cert number.
To my point.... why would a coin use a different cert number than the one on the slab? It seems like if they somehow changed the cert number the coin would have been reholdered? My guess is a back office mistake where they needed to change the cert for some reason, typo, duplicate, etc.
Funny thing to me is the coin will be headed back in to be reholdered and have a vam added......

I suspect that you've simply uncovered a very old data entry error.
