The 'I Like Golden Dollars' thread
I'm hoping that this thread can serve as a refuge for the few folks that derive pleasure from our Golden Dollars.
I'll start with a story or three.
The first isn't really about Golden Dollars, but about their silver colored clad sister, the Susan B. Anthony. A neighbor of mine was at a convenience store buying a few items and paid with a $5 bill. Three Susan B Anthony coins were tendered as change, but obviously this was a mistake as the cashier thought that they were quarters. When my neighbor mentioned to the cashier that there was a problem with the change, and that she had gotten too much in return, there was apparently a communication problem. The cashier became very belligerent, not listening at all, and thinking that she was demanding more change. Confused and bewildered at her attempt to return that $3, she simply shrugged and left. Yet another bit of bad feelings caused by the SBA.
My father isn't really into coins at all. Every once in a while, I can get him to relate to something. He does indeed like the writings of Thomas Jefferson, so today I went over and gave him a handful of Thomas Jefferson dollars. His eyes lit up and he took a look at them, even getting out his 10x magnifying glass. He was pleased enough that he stored them away near the Thomas Jefferson books. Doesn't look like he is going to spend them, he's a closet hoarder, I think.
I was at a hospital recently and there was a $30 co-pay. Now, I realize that this is a sensitive thing for many folks, having to pay money for what they already pay insurance for. But I consider health to be very valuable and I do not hesitate to spend money here; I would easily waste such cash on stupider items.
Anyway, I had a $20 bill and the rest was in Golden Dollars, a mix of Sacs and Prezzies. One of the nurses behind the counter gave me a stink-eye when she saw me lining up stacks of change on the counter. "Are those quarters?" she snapped. I suspect she gets folks paying in small denominations out of spite. "No, they are Golden Dollars!", I replied. The sour look on her face melted away instantly; her eyes opened up wide. "Really? Let me see!". She eventually paid a $10 bill out of her pocket, 'buying' those 10 Golden Dollars from the cash register till so that she could 'give them to her kids'. We talked a bit about them; they do serve as quite an ice breaker at times, these Golden Dollars.
I know that lots of folks hate these dollars. Let's try to keep this particular thread on the mostly positive side?
This one is doomed to scroll down into thread-oblivion, isn't it?

or whom, I have not a clue. I'll be lucky to be able to get them all as the series is a bit long. But what
the heck, give it the old college try! I do try to buy them from forum members on the BST.

Anyway, I like the coins and it's about the only way I will ever get a high grade US dollar from 1851 or 52.
I do think they are kind of over priced when one considers how little gold they contain, and if you look at pop reports, they have graded a surprising amout of this little buggers
For example, why did the Washington and Adams dollars come out so beatup and crappy while the Jefferson and Monroe dollars come out looking smooth and sweet?
Why is the JQ Adams Dollar plagued with die chips along with the Madison coins? Could it be that the high points of the portraits contribute to the quality of the coins?
All fairly interesting stuff!

Additionally, I like them because I've yet to run into someone, other than certain forum posters, that are not "delighted" to receive these or even see one of these coins!
At a garage/yard sale over the past weekend(s) I've given them out in change instead of paper bucks. That lasted for about 60 seconds because as soon as folks caught wind that I had them, they all wanted $1 or $5 or $10 worth for various reasons.
Needless to say, the coin would be very popular if only "merchants" started using them but many "merchants" are unaware that they exist or even how to obtain them as the banks are not willing to promot them.

Maybe, if after a few years there is a Whitman full, you guys will like them. They're really not easy to assemble. Too many ways to go in this hobby, but for future collectors, someone has to do the dirty work. No ?
