Coins struck on wrong planchet

How does this happen? Some buddies at the mint grab a handfull of blank dime planchets and gives them to their buddies in the penny press room and there you go? Whats the real reason for these odd planchets to accidentally get mixed up in a different section of the mint?

Planchets get stuck in the seams of the tote bins which are continuously used for whatever various denominations they are striking that day.

  • Should not QC and QA departments be checking the seems though? Well I guess thats why they are very rare anyways. Thanks.

My guess, there's a blank plan in a bin and they don't notice it.

Wrong planchets for the most part can only happen with larger coins getting made with smaller planchets. That's why you see 1c on 10c, 5c on 1c, 25c on 1c - 5c - 10c.

When you're dealing with hundreds of thousands of coins at a time, its fairly easy for these to slip through.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

Once during a floor tour of the Mint I saw a group of empty tote bins over against a wall. I looked down in them and the fourth one had a blank caught in the trap door at the bottom.

    Hey, stuff happens.

Keep in mind the mint is just like any other manufacturer making low cost items by the BILLIONS. A little "contamination" happens from time to time and QC can't catch everything.
