will TPGs ID varieties?

For example: Let's say I send in 8 buff nicks to PCGS unaware that the 1938d is actually a d/s. Will PCGS pick up on this and designate it a such, or even make me aware so that you can resubmit?

  • No, they will slab it as a 1938-D, unless you pay for variety attribution in those series that they attribute.

If they notified you they would be attributing your coin for free.
    They don't offer free attribution.

  • This is not entirely a bad thing, as it gives you the opportunity to cherrypick even slabbed coins....

just a heads up, that I put on the submission form the correct information for a 1979 Wide Rim SBA... they didn't even acknowledge it and labeled it as a regular SBA. So, even if you put that info on the form, they might not put it on the slab anyway.

True, but how professional is this? And what about this: I mistakenly ship a 38d thinking it was the d/s and pay for that attribution. Is it bbed or slabbed and graded as a 38d? Same question for VAMs. Suppose I believe you have a "long knock", but was wrong.

If the coin submitted for attribution doesn't attribute, it simply gets graded and slabbed.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

In reality, even if you have a variety unattributed in a PCGS holder, you got the grade. A good cherrypicker, marketeer or cataloguer doesn't require that information on the label. However, there are times mechanical errors and oversights occur. PCGS will fix it, and they will do it graciously, from my experiences.
