I was given a bunch of foreign coins today.

This is one example of a handful that I received. What is it and does it have any value? Thank you in advance.

  • Unfortunately it only has face value £1 GB Penny.......about 2 US cents. Very common, easily found and I think still in circulation.

Not quite, Wayne. This is a predecimal penny, worth 1/240th of a pound. They were withdrawn when Britain went decimal in 1970, but are still legal tender in Britain for 5/12ths of a new penny, or a bit more than half a US cent.

Naturally, there's far more than that worth in "bullion" copper content, and worth more again as a collectable coin. 1950 is in fact a slightly scarcer than average year; my Krause catalogue puts it at $6 in VF, $21 in EF; I'd grade this one gVF.

err that's not foriegn, that's a British penny which has not been in circulation since decemalisation in the early 1970's. Am I to assume you are somewhere in one of our former colonies image. 1950 George VI penny was a low mintage year of 240,000, that's low compared to the 121+ millions for 1938. Value $15 in VF $35 EF.

The 1950 is alittle tougher in MS... still nice for what it is

These were issued for use in Bermuda, which is why we see a lot of examples of this date and 1951 in the US. The two dates were almost never seen in the home country, except for the proof variety.

That's a nice better date 1P, If it does not have a spot in your collection PM I would buy or trade perhaps.
