    It certainly looks original!

Got a raw one myself, but it's got some unfortunate blotchy discoloration on the obverse:

I only have an 1854 in VF or so, but I think they are great coins and would love to put together a set one day. The price guides are way out of touch with actual availability for many issues IMO, though.

    That's a sweet piece, JB! I thought I had a 51 but it's a 61 but I also have a 52 for the lowball registry.

    Nice coin

    Here is mine ANACS AU53
I always wondered why the mint put the O in that location. I like where it is. Just curious as to their thought process. Anyone out there know ?

I had an original-looking 3CS, had it for 10 years before I discovered it was counterfeit.

Contemporary counterfeit 3 cent silver coins are very collectable. Do you still have it? Can you post a pic?

I'll bet it was an 1861.

The 1851-O shown here is very pretty and a coin most of us would love to own. Regarding contemporary counterfeit 3CS coins, I also have seen more 1861 pieces than other dates and many of these counterfeits exhibit recut digits.

Thanks for all the nice comments.

Yeah, I think the MM position is kind of cool. wonder what the mint people were thinking about when faced with the question as to where to punch it.

  • That is a really attractive 3- center. I have always meant to get a 51-O, as I have a soft spot in my heart for New Orleans coinage, and as many have said already I think the placement of the mintmark is cool.

    Nice coin.

Every Dansco 7070 should have one of these type coins in it.
    I like yours.

Here's the one from my clipped type set, unfortunately it had a light cleaning at one time. I can't imagine there are many error coins from that isuse.

The mint mark location looks logical to me. Usually is is between the central device and the rim or legend. In this case, if not there, it would be inside the central devices. The punched location doesn't disturb the symmetry too. 'twas a bizarre reverse design to start with. Trimes are just so unusual overall.

The types 2 and 3 reverses are so odd. Cluttered to be sure and on such a tiny coin. Not like on the larger Texas commom or even the Florida state quarter.

Wow, the coin in the OP is a nice original circ. Most circ coins I have seen look like crud which has kept me away from this series.

That True View pic has given me new hope in starting this set. image

How about some updated photos of this one... I'm getting better, but still have some room for improvement I think!

    Wow, a CircCam trime. Cool!

Even without the magical mintmark, I would like that piece a lot. I've never had the O-mint coin.

I wonder if the supersoft strike on the reverse happened a lot on the branch mint issues?

The AU53 that 1946Hamm posted is a beauty.

Speaking of trimes (without mintmarks), I just got these back in a PCGS submission not long ago. I was hoping for VF+ to XF grades on them, not being really secure in my grading experience with this series (at least the Type 1s). The first coin came back AU55 and the second AU53, which of course pleased me very much, especially as I had "stolen" these two and one other for ten bucks apiece, locally.

THAT is a beautifully crusty and worn 1852.

Love the circulation on the central star, and the two-tone of the reverse device.
