I've been doing a bit of research I have a feeling that perhaps the reason Australia is spelt Astralia is something to do with them only being able to use a maximum of 8 digits.
The "Sheild" misspelling was caught and corrected in November 9, 2005.
Your theory that Australia was mis-spelled because of space considerations is correct. The country name appears in a different place on newer certs and is now spelled out in full.
