It's Hockey Season.....

.....anyone care?image

It looks like it might be another Detroit/Pittsburgh Cup, although we know how often preseason favorites fulfill their potential.

The Redwings return basically the same team and picked up Hossa from the Penguins. Obviously Pittsburgh lost Hossa, along with Ryan Malone, but went out and picked up a few key guys in Miroslav Satan and Fedotenko.

My team, the Lightning went out and spent a ton of money this offseason to try and revamp the franchise that was a playoff mainstay for the past 5 years leading up to last seasons abysmal showing. It should be fun to watch 'em, but I'm not expecting much....a simple playoff berth would be great.

The Redwings doing well would lift the spirits of Michigan, this is a rather depressing state to live these days.

I live a mile from the Pacific Ocean just south of LA International Airport and haven't heard of "Hockey". Is it similar to stars on ice or ice capades? lol
  • I still think the Pens are over-rated. It's great to have 2 incredible scorers, but Fleury is nowhere as good as they think he is, and their D is swiss cheese.
As a Habs fan I have to say watch for the Habs as they're built for this year. Also watch for them to make a big move at the deadline. I also think the Stars and Sharks are better than the Wings. Hossa is the Mike Gartner of our generation--absolutely invisible in the playoffs year after year and I don't think this year will be any different. I'm going to call a Habs/Stars final.

'I don't care about the NHL' jokes are still extremely fresh and entertaining!

    Sincerely,

    Knock knock jokes
  • 80sToyguy, thanks for the serious response image Anyways, that's a very valid prediction you made there. Avery should bring up the intensity for the Stars. Did the Habs add or subtract anyone from last year's team?

I also think that San Jose has a great shot this year. I know they added Dan Boyle, and they were already a very good team.

-It would be a Cindarella story if Montreal went to the Cup final in the 100th season of of the club's existence. I think a lot will ride on whether Carey Price turns into Jim Carey: great one year, practically gone the next (and literally gone the year after that).

-Chicago might finally return to its early 1990s form. i.e. a legitimate playoff team. Toews (sp?) and Kane could be as effective a young 1-2 punch as Crosby-Malkin. The Detroit-Chicago outdoor game could be the event of the year.

-Toronto. Had to mention them for political reasons.

-Vancouver needs to improve so Roberto Luongo does not turn into the Marcel Dionne of goaltenders: the best of his generation never to win a Cup (because he spent too many years on crappy teams).

-I'm a Flames fan so I hope Kiprusoff will regain his form in goal. Iginla is (bar none) the Cam Neely of his generation: hitter, scorer, fighter, leader.

-Hockey News has Detroit repeating. Why shouldn't they repeat unless Chris Osgood starts playing like the nearly-40-year-old he is??

-Who's pegged for the Memorial Cup, eh??????/Qui gagnera la Coupe Memoriale, eh?????

I love watching hockey. I hope the Bolts do something this year. They didn't look too great this past weekend against the Rangers though.....

Like I said earlier, I'd be thrilled with a playoff appearance. We could get swept, for all I care, just get me playoffs!

I'm happy we have Lecavalier locked up for 11 (ELEVEN!!) more seasons and as long as the ownerships relationship with him stays strong, he should retire a bolt. Hopefully Vinny and St. Louis can mentor Stamkos and turn him into one of the elite players. What we really need though is a defense.
  • No Roids in hockey!!!
  • Hey Goot.
The Habs added Tanguay and Lang this year, essentially only losing Mark Streit and his 60ish points (which is hard to loose, no way they pay that guy 4+ mil though that he got). Salaries are so out of whack in the NHL though that you can't keep a team together too long. Like if I'm the Penguins I stop worrying about new line-mates for my top guys and concentrate on trading for a Chris Pronger type defenseman (and I know there aren't many). You just can't pay 5 guys 8 mil each in the NHL and that's why the Penguins window is so small (essentially 2 more years after this one, before most of the supporting cast has to leave because they won't fit under the cap). The Habs face that this year. Koivu and Kovalev are UFA after this season, as well as a cast of many more including Mike Komisarek, who is the closest thing they have to a 1988 version of Chris Chelios they have (can score and is as tough and nasty as anyone in the NHL). That's why I feel they will go for it all this year, as well as being 100 years old of course (quite a milestone). It all starts tonight in Buffalo anyways, so we'll see where it goes.

  • I had seats on the glass for the raising of the Detroit Red Wings championship banner at Joe Louis Arena last night. What an fantastic ceremony!! The ovation Steve Yzerman received when announced to the crowd was ear deafening. They lost the game but any chance you get to see the Stanley Cup up that close is awesome. Go Wings!!!!

Steve Yzerman is such a class act. And DARN...what a player he and Joe Sakic are my two all-time favourite players.

At one time I would watch any and all hockey...but now all that they have on TV around me is Toronto games...So, I tend not too watch too much anymore yet I still like to follow the teams.

    Goot,

I am a big Vinny fan and would love to see him take the bolts the playoffs this year. Also, I am a big Spezza fan and always like to see the Sens play well. But above all else I would LOVE to see Ovechkin have another great year and beat out Crosby. Think that kid is a bit overhyped.

I have Koivu, Kovalev, Tanguay AND Hamrlik on my fantasy team this year, so I hope for both of us that the Habs dominate the league this season.
  • Watch out for Chicago... if they can make it without any bad injuries, they are gonna be a good team, well at least on paper. Also, Detroit picking up Hossa, is huge. I still have hope for my Nashville Predators image

    GO FLYERS!!!!!
  • Hockey is a sport and a great sport. I just don't understand it all that well. Great from the seats and not on the tube. Sorry to say I had no idea the season had started.
  • The Bolts can Melrose. Not sure exactly what went on (not many do, unless you're on the "inside") but I do know that this team was essentially 5-11....5 wins, 7 losses, and 4 OTLs.

Let's go TOCCHET!!!! Just don't gamble!
