1970 Topps help requested

Does anyone know what PSA does with cards with a white line across top or bottom. Scans of two cards I am talking about below. They are nice cards but is it a waste of time to send them in for grading??? thanks al.

It shouldn't affect the grade, have seen 8's and 9's with this line, John

PM me if you want some cheap 8's, have around 50 extra

Current obsession, all things Topps 1969 - 1972

I'll second what he said. 1970 Topps have been known to have a white or black line across the top or bottom on occasion. I have about a half dozen that have graded out well - although it does somewhat detract from the overall eye-appeal of the card - it usually doesn't affect the grade. Kinda like rough cuts from the 50's & early 60's.

When I was building my raw 1970 set many years ago, I found the Willie Mays card was the hardest star card to find without the white line across the top.

Personally, and this is only my opinion, but I've always felt that a 1970 Topps baseball card with a white line showing, is off-center. The white line is simply a line on the sheet to mark where the cards are supposed to be cut. So...if the white line is showing, that means the cutters missed the mark. The John Harrell/Bernie Williams Giants rookie card is a perfect example...it's noticeably off-center. On the Dave Baldwin and Willie Mays cards above, both appear to be centered (if you ignore the white line). To me though, they're both off-center, since the white line should not be there.

The L-R centering on the Mays is more concerning for a PSA 9.

Although the L-R centering is not what one should expect from a 9, the centering on this card does appear to fall within PSA's guidelines. Unofficially it is about 57/43. PSA allows for front centering on a 9 to be as poor as 65/35. The fact that this Mays got a 9 speaks not to PSA's grading ability, but to their standards.

Still, the card looks a heckuva a lot nicer than my raw Mays, which also has the dreaded white line. Nice card, Nick.

It's a close 3rd behind 1974 (worst) & 1977(2nd worst); 1979 isn't too far behind either! 1972 & 1975 are in 1st & 2nd place...........I'm kinda partial to 1973 also because it was the first year I remember rippin' packs..........oh, the good times to be 8 years old and opening baseball cards after a little league game chewing that powdered bubble gum pretending it was tobacco....I could go on, but that's another topic.image
