Dansco 7070

I've decided that I want to start a 7070 type set. Where's the best place to purchase a Dansco album?

If anyone has any good tips/stories/ideas about their experiences with 7070 type sets, please share! image

  • If I were you, I would find a local shop that might have them for sale. If you purchase one online, the days of waiting will certainly lead to your demise before the album arrives image

Where to buy your 7070 album is the easiest decision you will make relating to your 7070.

Go as slowly as you can stand to, watch and learn before you purchase coins for that album.

I started out with a 7070 as well. I was nearly completed when I abandoned the structure. Now my type set in in cardboard 2x2s, in binder pages. This is infinitely more customizable. image

I still have my 7070 and some of the modern coins in it. PM me if you'd like one gently used for cheap.

The 70/70 type album is by no means complete. But it is a very good start to type collecting with many coin slots. There are many varities and early types (without slots in the album), that I will purchase after I complete this set. You will not be sorry once you get started on the 70/70. I am obsessed to fill the slots. But I pace myself because of finances. It is a fun way to get a great basic type set going.
I got mine thru the mail via the internet. It sat for about a year before I decided to open it out of the cellaphane wrap. Once I got started that was it! I now need only 11 more coins to complete it.

PS: I bought mine without the gold page and had to buy that later.

Brent-Kreuger seems to have the 7070 at a good price ($19.57) I believe the Gold page is extra (?) . -Preussen

That's where I got mine. Always good service and good prices. Yes, the gold page is extra.

Here are some tips/pointers from a thread that I posted several years ago:

<<Here are some of my lessons learned.

    1. It can indeed be done with no coin costing more than $300, but that will really limit your seated dollar to fine/very fine condition. I paid more than $300 for two coins, a nice WA seated half from Mark Feld, and a XF No Stars seated dime. Either coin could have been substituted for a coin in lesser condition without significant compromise.

    2. The seated dollar is by far the most difficult acquisition. At a recent show, I was offered two (sans and with motto) for $1300, and I really did not care for either. Come to think of it, you really do not see that many seated dollars on the market, in any price category.

    3. As for the seated coins, you have the most flexibility with the dime. They are abundant on the market and can be owned in any condition for a relatively reasonable price.

    4. I got the idea from someone else to get a "No Stars" seated dime for the "Stars" slot. Since you get the "Stars" with the WM, I did not think it was cheating to add the more expensive coin that is a different design type.

    5. I have strived to include all five mints (P, D, S, O, and CC). So far, I am lacking the "CC", but I expect to fill it with either the 20c or the Legend seated dime.

    6. The stupid large cents do not fit snugly in the assigned slots. !*^%%!&($#%! (as discussed in a recent thread)

    7. You can lose a small coin within the layers of a page. I nearly lost my WA seated half dime this way.

    8. Half dimes of all types are really cool. I can easily see why collectors are attracted to them.

    9. Three cent nickels are really cool. I am surprised that more collectors are not attracted to them.

    10. Dealers who sell the types of coins I would want for a set like this are not the same dealers that I patronize for the core collection.

    11. If you wanted to, you could complete the set with reasonable coins with a single phone call to JJ Teaparty.

    12. There are no slots for the Mad Marty weenie coin, the speared bison, or the AH Kennedy.

    13. When I complete this set (early 2006), I plan to do another album set, perhaps SLQ's in XF/AU. That one should take me much longer to complete. >>

P.S. I never got serious about the SLQ's

Go get an album. Start inserting coins. Stay under your budget and make it fun. Don't try to compete with the rich and famous. Just be you and enjoy your life. It's awfully short in contrast to coins.

    Here's my set.

    1. I tried to keep mine under $300 but as I've bought coins for eye appeal it turns out that AU58 is my favorite grade and there's a lot of coins that will put you over $300 in AU condition.

    2. I actually found the bust quarter to be the hardest to fill.

    6. I totally agree and it sucks.

    11. I agree. I finally broke down and bought my last coin (the bust quarter) from them.

    12. I put the AH Kennedy in the 64 Kennedy slot. It looks slightly out of place but I want to upgrade my Franklin to a Cameo Proof so they'll make a nice pair.

    Have fun,

    6. I called Dansco about the loose LC issue and they mailed me shims, made from thin strips of the slide material. You can make your own, too.

    14. Finding a nice Classic Head Large Cent with nice surfaces can also be a pricey proposition.

Thanks a lot of all the advice! I've since bought an album and have filled a few of the holes with coins I already have. I can totally see how one can become obsessed (as mentioned in an earlier post) with wanting to fill the book. I'm trying to get the best coins I can within my budget. It should be fun. I've been collecting for some time now but never concentrated on any particular series - I basically collected anything that interested me. I feel this dansco album will channel my desire to collect coins well! image

Again, thanks for the responses! image

A lot of good advise here. I just completed my 7070 type set. I would love to show the forum, but I cannot get decent pictures of it. Maybe I will try a little harder and get them up. There are many slots that I would like to upgrade. This set will probably be ongoing for the rest of my collecting life.

The coins that gave me the most trouble were 1. Classic Head Large Cent. 2. Both Seated Dollars and 3. Shield Nickel with Rays.

For the large cents that dont fit I used card stock pqaper cut in about 2 mm strips and wrapped them around the coin while it was seated in the slot. Problem solved. I like the idea of using clear plastic like the slide covers, though. FYI the Barber half also does not fit in the slot correctly.

Have fun. This set is a blast!
