it seems the companies that deliver blanks are doing a lot of business.
therefore only 1 troy ounce blanks are easily available in both silver and gold.

the mint cannot get enough of the smaller blanks so they are wisely stopping
    production of those types.

eventually their suppliers will catch up and all will be well again.

nothing to see here. move along.

I don't think wisdom is required to stop making something you don't have the "raw material" for.

Interesting. I thought companies like silvertowne and sunshine made them.
I guess it is only clad and silver then?

I read gold blank supplies to mean they get them from a supplier. I guess the mint
did not expect so many people, read american citizen speculators, to want to get in
at costs lower then an ounce.

    thanks for the info.

Now that I disagree with. They have the material.. after all, if it was gone.. how could they still be
producing larger 1 oz rounds? Still have supplies of blanks I suppose. But larger players in the metal
can still get quantity as far as I know. Dont confused little guys wanting small amounts versus the
companies that buy 1000s of ounces at a time for gold and 10000s of ounces of silver.

If they ran the place like a business to maximize profit.. those smaller coins would fetch them more
money overall. But the mint acts in mysterious ways ;-)

"raw materials" in this case would be the blanks for a particular denomination.

Of course the mint will do as it sees fit. It could easily produce whatever it wished.

Apparently, at this time, it wishes to produce 1 ounce bullion coins only.

If demand is so strong why aren't the metal prices sky high like they were a few months ago?

that is the million dollar question right now.
  • From the next to last paragraph

Gold has soared as much as $200 in the last 30 days as
panic investors flocked to gold as a worsening global financial
crisis prompted people to seek a safe haven

????? Gold has soared $200 in the last 30 days ?

Does this mean that the fractionals and possibly the proof ASE will go for moon money, at least temporarily?

They probably won't strike anymore 08-W ASEs either if they can ever resell all of the returns they have at 25 bucks each.

The Mint does NOT produce its own blanks. Given the current problems getting blanks for GAE Uncs which must be produced to demand by law, the new St. Gaudens design coin will not be introduced until later in 2009. March may be a good date for those.. but that is a guess.

False. They have no refineries anymore. All of its blanks are purchased from vendors.

i thought so. I would quite surprised to hear they still refined gold and made blanks...
    thanks for verifying that.
