Oh, Canada!

Sovereigns seem so common and it's hard to tell one country from another.
The Canadian Gold Dollar coins are an alternative for the folks who want something different on the reverse of the coin than your typical Sovereign.

It's got the sort of patina I like.

I wouldn't sneer at it anyway. I don't see those very often, and have never owned one.
That's a very nice (& extremely scarce!) Canadian gold $5 coin that you've got there.Canadian Sovereigns have the 'C' mintmark,& they are getting harder to find.I've never seen, let alone, been offered one.
Don,
The Newfoundland $2 gold coins are an extremely rare series to collect. The prices on those have strengthened in the past few years. It's a shame that the prices for the Newfoundland 1c. & silver coins are still too low,in my view.

Aidan,
The Canadian $5 set is fairly easy to acquire in circ condition with the 1912 + 1913 coins fetching about $250 - $300 each. The $10 pieces are a bit tougher to find but can be had for around $500 - $600 each. The Newfie $2 set is very difficult to put together because of the rare 1880 issue but most of them can be found for $250 - $400 each. The sovereigns can be had for similar prices except for the 1908 + 1916 issues.

I only have one, on my Holey Gold Hat. The price on it wasn't bad.
These are supercool (holey or otherwise), and I think Newfie stuff in general is underappreciated.
That is a nice coin, but shame about the hole though.I had an 1872 one that was both very worn & on a ring mount.Unfortunately,my flat was broken into back in 2002.Most of my collection was recovered several months later when a house was raided by the police, but the gold $2 from Newfoundland was not recovered.I've not been offered another one though.
