Thieves drive car into Michigan coin shop and steal coins

Police are investigating a robbery where suspects drove a car
into the front of Birmingham Coin and broke open a display
case, making off with an undisclosed amount of coins.

At 1:25 a.m. today, a Birmingham Police Officer saw a car
that seemed to have run into the front of the business
located at 33802 Woodward. The car, a 1993 Honda Accord,
was reported stolen out of Detroit.

Police say the suspects then entered the store and broke
open a display case that contained numerous types of
coins. It is unclear how much and exactly what was taken.

After the robbery, police said the suspects left the area
in unidentified vehicle that was parked behind the store.
The suspects left behind a sledge hammer, two-way radio,
bed sheet and a hammer.

Anyone with information regarding the robbery is being
asked to call the Birmingham Police Department at
248-530-1870.

Yeah, that is rather unusual, I would have thought a Ford F150 truck would have been a better choice.

I lived right across the street from that shop back in the late 90s. Even though they are in Birmingham (very upscale Detroit suburb), the Woodward traffic brings in the riff-raff and it is not always a safe area.

Maybe on TV, but this is only a property crime.
The cops will probably send out a rookie CI guy
with a 1920's finger print kit, well around here anyways. image

We had a rash of that kind of activity here a few years back; people where stealing cars than using them to create drive in windows at gun stores and pawnshops. image

Have you guys seen gas prices, you must steal economic cars, not a gas guzzler. Do you want all of your profits to go up in smoke? image

  • It was Birmingham coin, I saw it on the news last night. What amazed me is that someone could be so bold in a robbery of this nature. Woodward is a high traffic road and Birmingham Coin faces Woodward where it would be so visible from anyone passing by and I can guarantee you there had to be alot of people passing by when this happened. My question is why didn't they just use a sledge hammer to break the door down and do it much more discreetly as opposed to driving a car into the building right in front of a main street and drawing atttention. This would have to have been an extremely fast hoist where each person grabbed a few cases and ran out. I would expect that they were in and out within 1 minutue. Birmingham is probably in the top 25 cities in America in terms of wealth and I can assure you they have a well staffed police force and if the thieves weren't out within a few minutes the odds are a policeman would have spotted this crash or someone would have called it in and they would have been there within a minute or two. I also highly doubt and coin shop of their magnitude would leave really valuable coins out and not put them in a large safe each night.

I doubt if they got much. They don't leave any of the good stuff out in the cases at night.

(Abbott's is located just about a block south of Birmingham Coin and Jewelry on Woodward.)

    All glory is fleeting.
