Giveaway - Winner posted!

Here's something a little different for my promised giveaway. This is a Sassanian coin from ancient Persia/Iran. I believe that this one is from the reign of Khusru II (590-628 AD), but I can't guarantee anything in regards to the attribution. The piece is silver and about 23 mm in diameter. Post on this thread to win - a winner will be randomly chosen from all posters at 9:00PM CST next Saturday (Oct. 11).

    You're a class act, Bill.

I say this not only because of the generosity of the current giveaway (count me in, please!) but also because of some of the past generosity I've received at your hands. And all of our past transactions.

You've earned the Seal more than once.

If I win this giveaway I pledge to do my own ancient coin giveaway. (Of either a small Roman bronze or an ancient Chinese cash coin or two, probably the latter, as I recently acquired many from our funguslike friend).

Say, good idea putting the Kitco spot price meter in your sig, WC. I always forget what spot is and have to go to their page. I'll have to remember to put it in my own sig sometime when I don't already have a wide picture in there.

I didn't really want to enter a contest, but that is an interesting coin. And I have an alterior motive.

I'm supposed to be starting up a 'dollar' giveaway contest. Many months ago, I ran a series...for cents, nickels, dimes, quarters and half dollars. Then things got busy and I found it difficult to cough up some sort of interesting question that would provide interest as well as an even playing field for participants.

So, by entering this thread, I will 'ethically' force myself to start up my next dollar giveaway tomorrow. I think that giving is better than receiving. It is unlikely i'll win here...but it forces me into doing what I should have done weeks ago...start the dollar giveaway.

Now, the thinking cap goes on for a good question or four.

    Is that a machine-doubled nose?

No machines involved! Coins were struck by hand back then!

Doubling happened. And yes, ol' Khusru II (if that's who it is) appears to have a bit of a second schnoz.

What is the denomination on these? I'm sadly uninformed on Sassanian and Parthian and non-Greco-Roman ancients.

Ooh, can't turn down a chance to win a Sassanian drachm (right denomination?). Many many thanks.

I did not want to enter and seem greedy after you just sent me a coin, but after looking at it, I HAVE to place my name in the hat too!

Maybe one of these days I'll have something that I can put up as a giveaway myself, but I don't have much for my own collection just yet!

I'm kind of embarrassed to say that I don't know much about the coin other than it looked neat when I bought it. image
