What grade would you put on this circulated Merc Dime? My comment added to first post.

This coin is one of the tough mercs to find in nice circulated condition. I see many people that overgrade the date. 1925 mercs are well known for having softly struck details in the hair and lower reverse. This coin is no different than a common example. Actually it is a little bit better than the norm. The coin has a even gray color and appears to have been dipped at some time before. Some luster is present but not a whole bunch. The right hand field on the reverse shows a clashed die which is very common for the series. What do you think the coin should grade if you were the seller or buyer? Just for money reference the PCGS price guide has the coin at $120 in XF and $380 in MS60.

COMMENT: In my opinion the coin has AU details probably 55. The mark that has been mentioned is not a scratch but a circulation mark that really showed up well in the picture for some reason. The mark above it and a little to the left is deeper. The luster on the coin is probably something like 30% and is mostly in between the devices. Some luster is present on miss liberty and is nothing to jump up and down about. As much as I would like to call the coin AU it is just not in the books for me. Going back to eBay grading and some of the strange things you see I would call the coin XF45++ and would ask strong XF money for the coin when selling time arrives. As far as the coin grading at PCGS its a no way deal. ANACS would net grade it in my opinion. Lets hear some more opinions.

Ken, the chatter above "in God we trust" holds the grade down. Die break on obverse top and multiple clashes.
I'd say that's will get an AU50. Less if dipped and dull.

    Somewhere around AU-55 and AU-58

But I think the scratch will keep it from slabbing.

55 or 58 and I think the scratch may be an issue too but I didn't net for it.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

xf-45 for the old cleaning. Love the die clash!
  • I agree with lasvegasteddy regarding grade and cool reverse clash mark. I would think it would slab, but why bother?
