Morgan registry, question on what coin it uses?

How does the registry decide what coin is best for a set? I just had a 63DMPL replaced by a MS64 even though the guide shows the higher value for the DMPL on this coin. The points stayed the exact same for both coins.

Does the higher grade always get picked regardless of PL or DMPL's available?

I think it is the coin that is worth the most points or the highest grade available, including any bonus points. For instance if your MS63 is worth 5 points then you add 5 points for the DMPL and a 64 is worth 10 points the 64 would still be the default coin to add.
I am not sure but I think I am .image

Lets use an example: an 1878 that has a "weight" of 5 and a "DM" bonus of 2
& a "PL" bonus of 1. Think of the weight # as if the coin is counted 5 times. If you have
a MS-64 , you count it as having five of them. If your coin is also PL, count it now as a MS-65 coin.
If your coin is DM, you get +2 points to the grade, so it is a MS-66 & you count it as 5 of them.

Not all Morgan Registry sets allow bonus's's's for PL, or DM's. If you let the Registry software select
the coin for the slot it will select just the high grade unless the set has bonus's's's.

I probably could have said it simpler, but I'm tired!! Hope this helps.

"How does the registry decide what coin is best for a set?"

It's determined by the number of points.

" I just had a 63DMPL replaced by a MS64 even though the guide shows the higher value for the DMPL on this coin. "

The guide is for values not for points; points are based on grade plus bonuses. I would have expected that the bonus for DMPL would be 2; thus, a 63DMPL would be equivalent of a 65. However, there are sets which don't give bonuses. What Registry set is it?

"The points stayed the exact same for both coins."

I find that hard to believe, with bonuses the 63DMPL should be better than a 64, and without bonuses the 64 should be better than a 63DMPL.

"Does the higher grade always get picked regardless of PL or DMPL's available?"

As stated earlier, it depends on the set.

The following sets do NOT give bonuses for PL or DMPL:

Morgan Dollars Date Set, Circulation Strikes (1878-1921)
Morgan Dollars Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1878-1921)
Morgan Dollars with Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1878-1921)

    These do:

Morgan Dollars Prooflike Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1878-1921)
Morgan Dollars Prooflike with Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1878-1921)
Morgan Dollars Prooflike Only Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1878-1921)
Morgan Dollars Prooflike Only with Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1878-1921)

Use "View Set Composition" to check others.

The reason for this state of affairs has to do with the evolution of the Morgan Registry sets, and a complaint by Larry Shapiro. He was working on a top five set when PCGS first started adding bonuses for PL and DMPL. He complained that he had been selling PL and DMPL examples to buy higher graded non-PL/non-DMPL coins, and to start giving bonuses mid-stream was unfair. PCGS (David Hall I believe) agreed and they decided to leave-off the PL/DMPL bonuses for the "basic" sets. (Larry's set is now retired but you can see it on the all time finest list.)
