Looks like a typical alloy mix mistake

From the photo's it doesn't look like the coin has anything wrong with it.
BUT, if you feel it's been cleaned then I will take you word for it since you have the coin.

It LOOKS cleaned from the pics. But Stone could be right about the alloy mix. Either way, not very eye appealing IMHO.

It looks fine to me, I'm just not familiar enough with these yet, I appreciate the help.

Very odd surface appearance, but I am not well versed in this issue.

  • Not cleaned. Might grade MS 65/66

    64 because of strike
  • If its an alloy mix its still distracting.

Not whizzed. Many denominations of U. S. coins were like that in the early part of the 20th Century.

Cleaned or skuffed it may not grade.

    Reverse is awesome. Obverse okay.

    Good for you.

It looks like transfer scuffs from the planchet that were not pressed out during strike.

Have you weighed the coin to see if it is underweight?

Forgot to mention a nickel from that year should weigh approximately 5 grams.

Then I would say alloy mix could be the culprit. Also, it could be planchet damage that was not removed due to weak strike.

  • I agree with those who say there is an alloy mixture problem. This would explain uneven toning. I also believe the individual planchet was not rolled out smoothly explaining the obverse parallel lines in the indian's braid.

The flat appearance and lackluster look is not that uncommon for the 1931-S.

    64 for me.
