I stumbled upon that by accident before I even started this set. I was puting together a regular 7070 type set and saw a decent looking coin on Ebay which I bid on and won. There was no mention of a certificate. The coin arrived with a certificates. On another coin, the seller sent me like 50 certificate minus the coins That he had laying around.

Yes, they are the old photo certs used from late 70's to late 80's.

IIRC, the certificates with A, B & C prefixes were issued in the Washington, D.C. office. They had three different ledger books that incoming coins were written by hand into. Let's say that on Monday they used the A- book, Tuesday the B- book, etc. Because ledger books can only be used by one person at a time, this allowed one person to write up the returns in the A- book on Wednesday, while a different person wrote up Wednesday's incoming coins in the C- book. Ain't computers grand?

When they moved to Colorado Springs in the Fall of 1976, they wanted to start a new single ledger book. They were not positive that D- had never been used, so they skipped to an E- prefix followed by four numbers and added a -A suffix, similar to the U.S. currency numbering system. By the time I started there in late 1978 they were only in the E-xxxx-C block, IIRC.

I did photography as well as grading for several months, until business shot up and we could afford to hire a photographer. If you have a certificate dated November, 1978 through May or so of 1979, I probably shot it. If the picture is no good, somebody else did it.

My earliest dated certificate so far is Jan of 81. I like the older ones from 82 and earlier, as the coins seem to be more conservatively graded.
