Coinworld Request for pictures, is this legit?

jessewvujessewvu Posts: 5,065 ✭✭✭✭✭
I got an email from a person from Coinworld asking me to provide them with high resolution (400dpi) images of a coin to illustrate an article. Has anyone heard of Coinworld soliciting for pictures like that?

Seems reasonable to me. What could be the downside?

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

I've only been asked by people on these boards for images of coins for CoinWorld articles.

I say that if you don't know the person, then you should just ignore it.....but that's just me.

I am not sure if you're a BIG collector, but I find it surprising that CW needs to send unsolicited emails to subscribers to get pictures of coins. I would stay away from it.

Yes, they've asked to use photos from my web site before.

If you ask to use any of theirs, they'll say NO!!!!

Twice I've had Coin World ask for stories and/or pics, so it could be legit. Their roving reporters have been known to keep an ear to the ground here.

    Were any names mentioned?

Yes, I've had similar emails from Coin World once or twice, although in both cases there was enough content in the email so that I had no question it was legit. If you got a request that's vague enough for you to question, I'd be concerned about that also.

I sent them a number of coins in the past that were used for the "Making the Grade" series that focused on capped bust half dimes

What coin are they interested in?

I have received requests from them before but ever since I sent them a photo of my MS66 Cheerios Sac, I ignore the requests.
I did not subscribe to their magazine at the time and wanted to see the completed article with my photo in it. After asking if they would send me just the one issue with my pic, I heard nothing. I ended up emailing three times, to different folks in the company and not one responded.
Pretty bad if you ask me.
  • That would be cool though to have you coins illistrated in a magazine!!

I was contacted outside of this forum for pictures of a modern gold coin. I provided the best pictures I could, we'll see what happens with them. I do not subscribe to CoinWorld so I might never know...

Did you ask to be 'credited' for taking the picture? That's how you get your name in the magazine. Otherwise, they will use your photo, free of charge, not even mentioning where it came from.

I have occasionally supplied them with photos, or coins for them to photo. It's no big deal, just aggresive journalism.

  • Coin World staff members frequently seek images from outside sources. We have standing agreements with most of the major auction houses to use art from their catalogs as long as we credit the source in the article. On occasion, we will contact an individual who has an item that need an illustration of for an article.

One of the staff writers mentioned to me this morning that he had contacted someone about using an image.

If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me directly.

Well, they used my pictures and did not credit me. image The article is linked on their main page and dated 10/6/2008.

Oh well. Maybe they will credit me in the printed version.

They credited me with one of my photos, but killed it, too. It was rather bizarre, really.

It was an article about holey coins, but somebody apparently took my picture and edited white plugs into all the holes! Looked really weird. I'm not sure how that happened.
