What does the value really mean when you have nothing to eat...can you eat gold or silver or diamonds!!!!

    It's always been a barter medium. When a farmer has a field full of crops he just can't sit on it and sure can't just trade for things needed so it fills that gap.

    One can also not eat or drink:

    FRN's, oil, wood, nails, tools, concrete, batteries, flares, coal, guns, ammo, steel, shingles, propane, clothing, fishing line, and a host of other essentials.

    The argument works both ways. Obviously food and shelter come first. For as long as man has been civilized, gold and diamonds have helped him to acquire that food and shelter.
