UCLA group discovers massive prime number
13-million digit finding makes mathematicians eligible for $100,000 prize

-----------------------------------
And we thought a new discovery was a brilliant find.

isn't that something a main frame could of found quicker

i'd think nasa scientists resolve great dilema's with no bonus incentives other then keeping their positions

something about those china men too with their abacuses...had they only knew of the prize...they may of shut down their minting of bust dollars for an hour

My guess is the computers in question were part of the Prime95 parallel processing software (a.k.a. distributed computing). This software is used to find Mersenne prime numbers over 10,000,000 digits. A Mersenne prime number can be created when two is raised to a power then subtracted by one.

Anyone who has ever built a home computer (especially when overclocking) knows about burn in software tests and Prime95 was always my favorite software to be 100% sure that the system I just built was truly stable.

Really cool that the search is finally over.

No, one mainframe does not hold a candle to hundreds of thousands of computers working on these numbers during their "idle" CPU cycles.

    What a tremendously unimportant discovery
If I remember correctly, prime numbers are used to test cryptographic algorithms. So when you consider your WEP based wireless device (such as a laptop) can be hacked in less than 30 seconds... I would consider this a significant discovery.

I was reading along wondering if I was going to be the first to point out Prime95. I havent ran it in a while. For a very long time I had it set to use up all of my CPU usage when I left my computer idle.

Guess I'm a double uber geek. VAM hunter and Mersenne prime number chaser.
I'll see your bunny with a pancake on his head and raise you a Siamese cat with a miniature pumpkin on his head.

You wouldn't believe how long it took to get him to sit still for this.

  • $100k to find a prime number? And I'm sitting here looking for a VAM 23a wasting my time...................

These numbers are needed for figuring how much the bail out will cost. image
