I had the opportunity to lay hands on that piece when I was visiting the dungeon in Ye Olde Dead King's castle, a few weeks back.

It is VERY neat.

Mine is a screw on type.... note the threads...... I couldn't tell if yours was the same......

The consensus is that most are actually contemporary to the time of striking...... and used by either smugglers (for small but valuable goods) or spies (for secret messages) or probably both during the Napoleonic Wars and that time frame.....
