Just cracked a 61-62-63-64 proof sets

Well I just got these 4 unopened proof sets in the mail today. I tucked them away in the safe for safe keepings unopened. Well that lasted a whole 15 minutes than out they came ready for the knife. the 1961 set was kinda cool when I opened it. When I pulled the coins out of the envelope, I noticed all the coins (except the lincoln) had some really cool toning. The nickel is almost a blackish purple through out the whole coin. Its an even color all the way around the coin like somebody painted it. I think it looks very cool. I have never seen such a cool coin. But the other sets were just as expected. The 62 and the 64 dime both have an awesome cameo and so does the toned 61 franklin. But the funny thing about the 61 set with all the toned coins is that the plastic holding the coins together basically fell apart. The glue that holds the coins in seperate compartments was gone an coins were basically in one huge plastic wrapper. And yes the coins were touching each other. Even the US MInt coin was toned. Ah thought I would share. As a rather new collector it doesn't take much to make me happy.

Sounds like a happy coin collector. Keep up the enjoyment. image I've seen many of those proof sets where the glue has come loose and the coins flopping about.
  • Any pics?

  • This is a bit off topic but does anybody no much about a sony cyber shot 7.2 megapixel. I am wondering if I can use this camera to take the good coin pics I see on these boards. I know I have read other mention that the use a point and shoot. And mine does have a Macro. I would really love to take a pic of that nickel I mentioned.

It's not really glue that hold the packaging together.

There are four layers of plastic and the inner two are very pliable. They are
heat sealed under pressure. It's not unusual for the early ones to have not
sealed properly but I've seen no evidence that they might seal and then come
    apart.

This is much less of a problem with the later (mint & SMS) packaging but it's
common for a coin to occupy the spot where the sealing machine operates
which leaves the internal gap. The coin is typically damaged in the process.
It's not unusual for the seal to be very narrow or weak as well.

The early proof nickels got some spectacular toning and purple isn't unusual.

Nice cameos are never truly common.

    They sound like nice sets.
