Question on the grading of Hand cut Hostess cards.

I cut up some of the Hostess Panels that I've had for the last 20 years, and then sent the cards in to Psa. The Grades popped a couple of days ago, and they are all horrible. I have personally seen Hand Cut Hostess cards that where graded Psa 10, and they looked like they where cut out by a 1st grader. Why did I get hosed so bad? Is it just pop report thing?
The cards haven't come back yet, but here are a couple of examples that I did not send in, along with the grades they gave me.

To me, the biggest problem with Hostess cards is surface scuffing. You could have a card that is professionally cut, but it still could have even minute scuffing on it that would bring down the grade.

  • It could be possible that there is too much extra outside border and not cut close enough the black lines?

  • I was thinking the same thing Dave. There is a 1975 PSA 10 Yount on eBay right now that has very little border outside the dashes.

I have found the same with Post Cereal cards. PSA seems to prefer them cut very close to the border.

it does not seem like your cut examples shown have straight cuts [e.g. the borders are wavy in their thickness....not one single, sweeping straight cut down the border of the card.

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

Who knows? Bad things sometimes happen to wonderful people. My guess is you caught a grader on a bad day. Since none of these cards are worth the two bits in these holders I'd crack them all, check for surface imperfections and worn/turned corners, and maybe resubmit the Ryans. I don't think anything on here, with the exception of the Ryans, is worth more than $40 in PSA 10, in which case there isn't much point in resubbing any of the rest.

If I had to guess, that's what I would say, too. They definitely want a distinct white border all the way around the dotted lines.

Yeah, meaning you should use a paper cutter or like (scrapbook thing is great) so that you get visually perfect edges. Several of yours look wavy.

I have always liked the Hostess cards. Here is a neat scan for you...
