It looks like there is some light rub on the hair above the ear.

BTW: This was BB'd for "cleaned" - can someone with a better eye than me tell me the markers that this was cleaned? The picture is a good representation of what it looks like in hand. I had thought this would easily grade MS63ish or better but it came back as cleaned.

  • I don't see any cleaning on the obverse(though it is REALLY hard to tell by pics sometimes) but the reverse seems to show a difference...possibly where it has been rubbed or lightly cleaned.
  • not an expert, but I usually look for fine hairlines on a cleaned coin - dont see it on this one - anyone can advise or eloborate why this coin got a BB'd for cleaning??

  • It does have that "cleaned" look to me, whatever that means. Hard to explain.

Look at the "halo" affect on the coin from a light cleaning. It's especially noticable on the reverse. Some might might call it blotchy. There's a kind of glow around the wreath for example. It's had just the slightest rub with a jewelers polishing cloth or something similiar.

Yes, it probably was dipped for a second or two too long, or maybe it was not rinsed enough. While not a expert, I do look for distinctive color or pattern differences on MS coins. When it is not toning, generally that coin has been dipped. The patina does not always react the same on every coin. Get a few cheap morgans and try it. You will see what I mean. I also know that dipped coins are accepted and slabbed every day. It is all about the look. What frustrates me is trying to determine if the hairlines are from the die process, honest wear or a cleaning. Take a 10x loupe and look at graded and ungraded coins. Yikes! If you can train your eye, the lines in the surface generally are from cleaning, while the lines that "float" on top generally are die/wear. It is a skill just trying to determine the difference, and I am still learning!
