How closely do dealers monitor these boards for the areas of interest of collectors, for future sale

Being on these boards for a while, I have come to know what many of the collectors here collect. For example, if I had a capped bust half dime for sale, I would send a PM or an email to Barndog. If I had an excessively rare MS69 Virginia Statehood quarter, I would sell that exceedingly desirable modern trinket to Cladking. Back in the heyday, if I had a dirty gold coin that did not meet Longacre's discriminating standards, I would pawn it off on RYK. image

From a dealer's point of view, I am sure they know who here collects what. Even dealers who do not participate on these boards, but monitor them, should know what we collect.

When a dealer has a particular coin in stock that he might think a collector here would want, how likely would he be to drop them a PM or an email to let them know of the coin? If I knew that someone collected a particular date coin and I had one available, personally I would type an email in a frenzy to that collector to let him know of it.

Does anyone have any comments or is this not a common practice by the dealers?

I always thought it was an invasion of privacy if dealers start spamming collectors like that. If I had let a dealer know that I would like to be updated whenever they came across something I would like then it's welcome.

That said, I would never refuse looking at a classic head half eagle if someone offered it. image

I don't look for it, but when something is posted that I've missed, or am not aware of, I try to use it to my financial advantage.
I used to be somebody, now I'm just a coin collector.

I have had vanishingly few unsolicited dealer (or collector) offers to me asking be to buy coins from them. That's a good thing. image

Perhaps, due to his extreme prominence and excessive prolificness (yes, that's a word, I just checked), the OP may be in a greater number of Circles of Trust, thereby subjecting him to more offers of widgets by wannabes. (That's a mouthful of forumspeak for one sentence image ).
  • If I were a dealer I wouldn't send unsolicited PM's but I would take note of the WTB and respond to those. Usually they're widgets though so it might not be worth trying to handle that kind of merchandise.

Personally I'm waiting for the dealers that know I'm collecting the Mercs in rattler holders to give me a call.

I asked Dick Osburn about this at a recent show & he indicated that he is too plain busy to keep up with all the action here.
