What's a good case to buy for under $1k (baseball)

I was just wondering what good/fun cases are out there to buy that are under $1k. I was looking at all of the 2008 A&G threads and see cases for about $800. I was looking to buy some baseball cases right now as I'm supposed to be on bedrest for a while and need something to do.
Any year will actually do, I was just mentioning the A&G as a possible case.

you could rip about 12 cases of 90 Topps.

I had some great fun with 2008 UD Goudey. I ripped a full case plus 8 more boxes and it was a blast. Along with a few trades here, some ebay purchases and some sportlots purchases, I was able to get 2 complete master sets (1-330) and my big "hit" was a Cal Ripken Jr. Sport Royalty short printed auto. I had a lot of fun and am in the process of flipping everything. I've already broken even and still have 1 master set, the majority of the mini's and a number of SPs to sell.

It's not often that I've been able to ENJOY a rip and still profit from it! image

My profit is going back into grading fees on my latest submissions sent in to PSA. I love it when my hobby pays for my hobby.
  • The Goudey looks like a fun rip. It's also in the same price range. 12 cases of '90 Topps is sure a lot of gum to chew.

You may be able to get a 1989 high case for about a grand.....check out Baseball Card Exchange....I still think they are awesome looking cards and it has many HOF'ers or potential HOF'ers in it.....just a thought....
  • I would get 16 cases of 1989 Fleer baseball racks if Steve has that many left.

    To rip open.

Wouldnt you get bored after 2-3 boxes of the same product ?
Why not buy a little bit of different things, if you have $1000 to spend ?
  • I actually agree with hockeyguy on this one. For $1000 and only using BBCE's inventory (sorry, I am a little biased) there are quite a few options for a few different boxes. I'm also not really into too much modern (last 10 years) stuff.

  • << <i>I actually agree with hockeyguy on this one >>

It's not a sin to do so

Dave & Adams Card World is also a good option.
They give free shipping on orders of $150 or more.

I was just thinking the same thing. My boss left on vacation. He called me about 10 minutes ago and told me to look in my desk. Inside I found $1000 in cash. "Petty cash"? I ask, Nope. A bonus. Yeah !!!! The boss should on vacation more often. I dont know why I got a bonus. I was expecting a pink slip, since I'm on the internet all day. lol

I think I'll get 2 rack cases though I need to look re-check my emails/posts and see if anyone else has pulled ANY Bill's from his racks. My last 2 cases from him were empty. Kinda takes the fun out of it when I'm hoping for one on top and there's not even one in there. Maybe he has alot. Will he tell you if they are from the same buy? Hmm. Maybe a phone call is in order tomorrow.

Pretty much the rest will go to....ugh....bills.

  • Can I ask what the excitement about 1989 Fleer baseball is all about ?
I always see it in threads
Is it basically the Billy Ripken cards ?
  • Donovan,

I can answer your questions on the 89 Fleer. One I can answer now. The other one I can answer tomorrow when my case gets here. I talked to Steve via email about 2 weeks ago before everyone here made their run on his 89F wax boxes. He said at the time that he had a ton of each of wax boxes, rack boxes and rack cases. He said he had no idea where they all came from because they were from numerous purchases from different locations. Apperantly he is now down to only the 3-box rack cases, but if they were from different purchases, there is no telling what point in the production release that each case came from. I will send you a PM early tomorrow night after I open mine.

I am more obsessed now with the Randy Johnson variations now than the Ripkens. PSA has still not figured out any system to properly label the flips. Plus, I got my 6 boxes for about $8/box. I pulled 6 Ripken FF, 6 Johnsons (3 variations) and 7 Griffeys. Grades popped yesterday and got one 10 on each but only submitted 2 Ripkens and 1 Johnson adn I think 5 of the Griffeys.

I was thinking the same. I think it's the Ripken and Randy Johnson variations that people are after right now. I just placed an order for four 1989 Fleer cases. I'm going to buy a 2008 Goudey from ebay and get some boxes from Dave and Adams (I've ordered from them before and got excellent service).
I think I'll spend $2k for this rip adventure.
    Please keep the suggestions coming.

    Brian

    For me it is.

  • If I was going to spend $2k, I would have to get a box or two of 1979 Topps from BBCE. We have done them twice now on group rips and they were very well centered which is obviously the biggest issue with that set. The cards were also crisp and clean. Heck, even my Nolan Ryan with a tiny stain from the first rip got a PSA 9.

So how hard is it to pull the variations ?

I hope I get at least a partial order (out of the 4 that I just placed) of the '89 Fleer rack cases.

  • << <i>So how hard is it to pull the variations ? >>

Just the same as the Ripkens. The most valuable variation, unlike the Ripken, apperantly were the first releases that showed the full Marlboro sign. I believe Donovan said there are at least 8 known variations.

I'll give you my Ripken cards if/when I get my cases.
  • This topic is interesting.

I too have been waiting to make some purchases.

I've been saving my "allowances", and managed to stuff my "cards envelope" with nearly $7,000.00

I dont want to blow it all on boxes and end up with $7,000 worth of commons & off-centered cards

Should I get one of the cello boxes or just the wax boxes? He has them both listed on the site.
  • WAX
  • so much for not blowing the whole thing on one product
  • I'll keep you guys updated on what I get.
So far I've placed orders for (4) 1989 Fleer rack cases (BBCEX), 1-UD Goudey Hobby case (ebay BIN), 1- Allen & Ginter hobby case (ebay BIN). I'm debating on the 1979 BB wax box right now.
  • Just thought I would throw this one in too. It was pulled from the group break when we did the pack run from 1977-1985

I've busted 2 cello cases and 10-15 rack cases.

    Pulled-

    Black Box
    Black Scribble
    FF
    FF saw cut
then 1 box had no Ripkens. Sold the other 2 and they had Ripkens !!
About 5-7 cases had no ripkens.

Never pulled a rare one or broke even.

Thanks !! But really I only need a few versions to upgrade (very rare) ( only keep one of each version) and will gladly buy any FF versions you have showing on racks.

    Thanks for the offer though.

    (1) 1998 Bowman's Best Football box
    (1) 2007 Bowman's Best baseball hobby box
    (1) 2008 UD Goudey baseball case
    (1) 2008 Bowman Chrome baseball hobby box
    (2) 2008 A&G baseball hobby box
    I'm almost done purchasing.

What we've got here is... failure to communicate. Some men you just can't reach. So you get what we had here last week, which is the way he wants it... well, he gets it. I don't like it any more than you men.
