A mini 90% hoard at my moms house

So the other day I was talking to my mom and she said that she has completed the state quarter series and she was going to swing a set by my work sometime during the week. I told her that I was excited about getting the set from her becuase I had started collecting coins about a year ago. She said that she did not know that I was collecting coins. She then asked what I collected. I told her what coins I liked. She asked me if I had any old silver coins. I told her I had a few. She then told me a story about my step-grandmother (RIP) and how she was ready for Y2K. My grandmother went to all the local coin shops and bought up ALL the junk 90% silver they had ready for the world to end.

So this morning mom came by my work and dropped off a 6ish pound bag of 90% quarters and dimes. She wanted me to go through them and see if there was any rare coins in there. I told her I would check but I am sure there would not be none because the coin shop would of cherry picked them out before selling them for spot. I told her I would check them out today and return them tomorrow. She said don't worry about them and for me to hold them. So I don't know if she gave them to me or not. Even if she did they would never leave my collection. I ordered 2 Danscos today for the quarters and the dimes.

I went through the quarters--and to be honest maybe 40% of the coins are "junk" coins. There are some really nice coins here. I wish I could take good photos like some of you to show some of the amazing toning going on with some of these coins. I have sorted them in years. as you can see in the pic, the top row are the 30's an only a few. Whats weird is there were tons of 1941-1942-1943-1944-1945. I also found 7 standing liberty quarters (6 no dates and 1 1929). I will go through the dimes sometime today. But I was looking at the dimes and found a 1940 Mercury in proof-like condition. Still has the new shine (it is not cleaned) and looks to never been circulated. Thanks for the read.

Heres a pic of the quarters and the bag of dimes.

Very Cool... and very similar to how my 90% collection got started.
  • That is cool! I love the part about your Step-GMA prepping for Y2K. image
imageQuid pro quo. Yes or no?
  • Always nice to get 6 pound bags of 90% no matter what is in it.
  • Nice little stash there. I always like looking through these types of hoards even though the possibility of finding a '32D Washy or a '16D Merc are very remote-I still find it fun.

Whats sad is it was true. She took it to the extreme with the 12.000 dollar hard wired generator and all.

She was not the only one who took it seriously.
I flew to a gig on Y2K New Year's Eve and back on New Year's Day and I can tell you the airports were empty!

I have an Aunt with a circulation hoard. She wants to bring me over two banks she filled up with
change before she got married in the sixties. Fingers crossed.
