Does the market take care of pricing regarding mislabeled coins, or are the price guides positively/
In another thread, there is a discussion about whether mislabeled coins affect the point values of the Registry Sets (in other words, if a mislabeled coin can be put in the “wrong” Registry Set to artificially inflate the point value of that set). An excessively prominent member of these boards made an interesting comment as follows:
“A number of years ago we had a chance to buy a Myddelton Copper Company of Upper Canada token in PF66 ex-James Watt. But it was labeled as a Myddelton Token, Copper (a different coin with a different PCGS #). We did not buy that coin, that error was never corrected, and to this day that coin is listed in the pop report as the single highest graded Myddelton Token, Copper, POP 1/0.”
Now Longacre wouldn’t know a Myddelton Upper Canada token if it bit him on the a$$. However, I was curious how this error affects the pricing of both the token itself, and the Myddelton Token, Copper, that it is impersonating. Because this coin happens to be listed as the highest graded coin in the series (though wrong), does that positively or negatively impact the prices of the other coins (the “real” coins in that series) because this pop top impersonator exists?
