This variety has been recognized for quite a while. Zoell catalogued it in the 1960's.
In my recent book on 1858 cents, I catalogued it as a marriage of obverse die OB2 and reverse die RB1. This die marriage makes up about 6% of all 1858 cents based on the statistical random sampling I did for the book. The later obverse die state, with the neat die chip in DEI, occurs on about 40% of this die marriage, or about 2.4% of the entire 1858 mintage.
It's a nice coin.

Looks pretty original. I'll go somewhere between VF30 and EF40, but leaning towards the lower.

That is one extremely nice find that you have got there. The Canadian 1858 1c. coin never turns up at all.I've seen an 1858 5c. coin though.
It is the 1859 1c. coin that turns up a lot.
The Charlton catalogue lists a lot of the varieties that have never been listed in Krause, including the extremely rare Canadian brass 1c. coin.
I do collect Canadian, including provincial coins,as Canada is part of the British Commonwealth anyway.
