I though I was actually starting to handle the pictures. Here's a couple examples I thought I did a decent job on.



Then I tried taking a picture of a Merc in a rattler slab. It feels like I'm frickin' starting over. I'm using a Canon PS with a tripod (finally) and two fluorescent lights at 10:00 & 2:00. I can't get a decent shot focused up close and when I do a full slab shot the label is so washed out you can barely read it. Any suggestions? Is there anything I should be doing different because of the slab? I'm a t work so I'll post my disgustingly bad pictures later tonight.

When you're shooting a bright coin and the slab isn't so bright, one will likely be properly exposed, and the other heavily over/under exposed. You can try repositioning the lights to better illuminate the slab, but that will result in the coin being darker. I tend to shoot just the coin and when I have to (for eBay), not worry about how well the slab shot comes out; closeups are there for a reason

Washout on the label may be related to the glare from the lamps. Back them off a little and see what happens.

I was trying to take a couple of close shots for grading questions but I couldn't even come close to a decent shot. When I zoomed out for the slab I was able to get some focus but the washout was there like I mentioned. When I was shooting the Barber dime I was able to zoom right in and get some nice shots.

I'll try moving the lights and see if that helps.

A tripod makes it hard to get the lens parallel with the slab surface. I'm still looking for a good sturdy copy stand. I find two opposing lights to work best on slabs, just gottat try to keep the reflection off the plastic.
