42 Canadian 50 Cent

A good example of what to NOT do to a coin.
I did not do this cleaning and in hand it is not so obvious.
In hand I find it very attractive in a coin that has circulated.
It would have been so much nicer if it had not been whizzed.

Carry it in your pocket for a time with other coins...most of the hairlining will go away.

  • Good idea but I do not carry coins in my pocket.

I will live with it the way it is and I will still like it. Honestly, you can't see the whizzing in hand like in that photo.

What he really meant, is that after a while there will be so many hits, rim nicks and scratches that the hairlines will no longer bother you. image

Wayne, the truth is that nobody likes to carry coins in their pockets anymore. But I believe that us, coin collectors, should resist that trend, even if we end up carrying pocket pieces only, when coins will have become obsolete. image

BTW, your imaging and photoshopping skills are impressive! image

Thanks a lot. I am working hard on trying to get the photos right.
I don't use photoshop but a simple program I found that lets me crop round and then combine into one photo.

Another trick is to take a bunch of change out of the coffee fund where you work, put it in a towel with the whizzed coin, grab both ends of the toel and raise and lower your hands alternately, moving the coins from one end of the towel to the other. You can put about two years of pocket wear on a coin in a half hour. Not that I'd ever do something like that. image

Looks more like someone used a pencil eraser on it. I know I murdered a few coins like that back when I was a beginner...

I have one that has only recovered in the past decade, from an eraser job I did as a kid, back in 1977.

It looks fine, now. Of course I dipped it once or twice after I graduated from pencil erasers to coin dip. image

For all that, it has retoned quite attractively. Would never slab, anyway, because of a rim bump. (1827 USA half dollar, EF45 details).

  • Wayne,
It's a bummer about your Canadian 1940 silver 50c. coin.It could be a better date.Imagine if you had whizzed a Canadian 1947 Maple Leaf 50c. or a Canadian 1948 50c. coin. These coins are very scarce.

Does anyone have the prices in both Charlton & Krause for Wayne's coin?

    Aidan.
